Osler recast the practice of medicine by going to the patient's bedside and blending the science of medicine with the art of healing. Stowe challenged the assumption that medicine was a man's career. Traditionally, women have always played a role in healing as midwives, nurses, or family caretakers. Overcoming tremendous obstacles, Stowe was the first Canadian woman to practice medicine in Canada. Many other less renowned physicians practised medicine in the rural and frontier areas of Canada, bringing new treatments and therapies to their patients while facing challenges of travel, weather, and professional isolation. The Doctor's Doctor: Sir William Osler In the nineteenth century, one of the most famous physicians in the world was a Canadian - Sir William Osler (1849-1919). During the course of his professional career, Osler worked in three countries - Canada, the United States and England - all of which claim him as their own. While it is undisputed that Osler was a brilliant, innovative physician and teacher, adored by his students and patients, he did not make any great medical discovery. The highlights of Osler's life and career are outlined in the Box . From a humble childhood, he became the best-known, most-admired and influential physician in the world. The peak of his career was the 16 years (1889-1905) spent as Foundation Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore. The new hospital and university had been endowed by the bachelor merchant Johns Hopkins, who had profited in the Civil War, but was aware of the poor standards of medical education which prevailed in its aftermath. The standard for Johns Hopkins was to be that "the seal of its diploma should be a guarantee that its possessor is not only a well educated physician in the fullest sense of the word, but that he has learned to think and investigate for himself, and is therefore prepared to undertake, without danger of failure from not knowing how to begin, the study of some of the many problems still awaiting solution".

That breathtaking compliment suggests one reason why circles of intense love and admiration surrounded Osler for most of his career: He could animate the people near him with the power of his own intelligence, energy and high spirits. He was the most influential doctor of his age and probably the greatest Canadian produced in the 19th century, but what seems most striking about him is his effect on others. How often can we say of a happy and successful man that he was the cause of happiness and success in those around him? Students and colleagues warmed themselves at the hearth of his personality, and his renown as a diagnostician brought him an amazing range of patients. As a fairly young man he treated Walt Whitman and, in later years, he treated both Henry James, the novelist, and his brother, William, the philosopher. In 1913, he examined the pale, thin, young Prince of Wales, who was later briefly Edward VIII. "He does not impress me as a very strong organism," Osler noted. Osler's sense of humour could get him in bizarre trouble.

    Extractions: Back to Index Dr. Sidney Raffel of Stanford Medical School is a distinguished graduate of Johns Hopkins Medical School, of which William Osler was a star. He speaks of Osler with great admiration not only as a doctor but as a human. He regrets that many medical students at Stanford do not know who Osler was. This is especially unfortunate as Osler had an indirect tie with Stanford. Oxford University Press has just published a 600-page biography of him by Michael Bliss, entitled William Osler: A Life in Medicine . It should have a worldwide appeal, but especially so in Stanford, with which he had an indirect tie. Osler has a great appeal for me because I regard medicine as the noblest profession, and regret that much more publicity goes to modern popular writers like Hemingway and Gertrude Stein and artists like Picasso, who as humans were horrible people. Only a renewed sense of responsibility will save our civilization. Physicians have it to a degree which balances the lack of it in the latter group, the cult of whom makes one doubt the accuracy of the statement that you can't fool all the people all the time. Perhaps it is true however, since I suspect that many people feel as I do but are afraid to speak up for fear of being dismissed as unsophisticated, lowbrow, or reactionary. Osler (1849-1919) led a saintly life free from professional vanity, marred by the death of his son in 1917, killed in Flanders. Both he and Johns Hopkins were testimony to the importance of religion in developing a sense of responsibility. He was the eighth of the nine children of the Rev. Featherstone Osler, a former officer in the Royal Navy who took holy orders and emigrated to Canada with his pious wife. Osler received his medical degree from McGill University and then went to teach at the University of Pennsylvania.
