"In professional musicians at least, recent brain imaging studies have shown that the different ways they respond to sound and finger movements seem paradoxical: when they hear a sound it activates areas of the brain that process movement, but when they silently tap out musical phrases it evokes brain activity in areas involved in hearing." Discovery Saving Raphael For God And Country A prominent curator attacks the British government for not stepping up to keep Raphael's Madonna of the Pinks from being sold to the Getty and moved to the US: "Can anyone seriously suggest that the country would not be much much poorer without the great works of art in this exhibition? The National Gallery is the greatest place in the world for the study of early works by Raphael, and that's where the picture should be. For God's sake! If it's not Raphael then it must be the work of some even greater artist whose name is currently unknown to us. Of course it's a Raphael."

Extractions: IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU , by Kathleen O'Reilly Excerpt: The entryway was dark, with only a dim streetlight coming in from outside. Still, the light was enough to see him clearly, to see the vulnerability in his eyes. Every now and then, she saw what lay beneath the surface and it was that small piece of him that he kept so hidden that called so strongly to her. Probably another stupid mistake, but she wasn't going to walk away. "You are my hero." He looked as if he really liked the way she looked. It wasn't as if she was ugly or anything, but she certainly couldn't compete with Cassandra, or Jessica, or Beth. "It's okay? I mean, well, this is who I am," she said, hating the whiney tone in her voice. She despised women who weren't secure in their own self-image and she had no reason to complain. Her gifts just weren't the usual combination of blond hair and blue eyes, capped with a J Lo butt. Unfortunately, she had no butt at all.

Extractions: Jul 25, 2005 D ODGE CITY, Kan. (July 9, 2005): In a race that went caution free, Jason Martin of Liberal Kansas bided his time, then made his move late to take his first series victory of the season as the O'Reilly National Championship Racing Association 360 sprint car division invaded Dodge City Raceway Park Saturday night. Woodruff would inherit the lead while behind him, Johnson began to challenge for the top spot. At the races midway point it was Woodruff, followed by Johnson, Martin, Peebles and Punch as Woodruff continued to hold onto a slim three to five car length advantage. On lap fourteen Martin began making his move towards the top spot as he got around Johnson for second and set his sights on the leader. With Woodruff down low and Martin up high, the leaders began making their way towards lapped traffic on lap sixteen before Martin got a run on the leader in turns three and four to take the lead on lap nineteen. From there it was all Martin as he cruised the final six laps to take his second career series victory by a half straightway over Woodruff. Peebles got around Johnson with two laps to go to take the third position while Drown rounded out the top five.
Extractions: Jul 25, 2005 S ALINA, Kan. (June 11, 2005): Man, this race was ugly. From the get-go. Four yellows, three red flags (including one on the first lap), a couple of racecars upside down and 45% attrition in the feature. Despite all this and two broken ribs, points leader Garry Lee Maier made lemonade from the lemons of the race to put together a charge from last to first and record his initial win of the season in the O'Reilly/NCRA Sprint Car Series presented by Hoosier Racing Tires. He became the fourth different winner in four races this year. With 26 cars on hand, Maier started on the outside of J.D. Johnson and from there cause the initial red flag. As Johnson and Maier led the field at the drop of the green he spun in the entrance to turn two. Shane Howard and Steve King also spun there, trying to avoid Maier who admitted to a big racing mistake. "It makes it tough when you do it the hard way like I did," he said. "To start on the front row and spin out on the start wasn't smart at all."

Bruner Blog: Terry Gross Vs. Bill O'Reilly I happen to have heard Gross s interview with O Reilly, as well as her AJ Liebling I m all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of http://www.bruner.net/blog/archives/011319.shtml
Extractions: Bruner Blog All Bruner, All the Time * Main Old Hag has pointed out that NPR's Ombudsman Jeffrey A. Dvorkin has given Terry Gross (host of the popular Fresh Air program) a spanking over her interview with rightwing dickhead Bill O'Reilly. I happen to have heard Gross's interview with O'Reilly, as well as her related interview with liberal humorist and author Al Franken a couple of weeks earlier, and I have to agree with Dvorkin that Gross was not even-handed in her harrassment of O'Reilly. In her prior interview with Franken, she was possitively fawning, while she spent the whole time challenging O'Reilly with accounts from Franken's book about what an asshole O'Reilly is. The best part of the interview, right before O'Reilly stormed out of the studio (giving a 50-minute interview, first), was him demanding of Gross, "Were you this hard on Al Franken? Well, were you? Were you" to which she could only meekly reply, "Well, no, but..." (or words to that effect) before he cut her off to rant a bit more. All of which makes me think I agree with Curtis White's essay "The Middle Mind" (which I read a couple of years ago in Harper's) to the effect that what passes for intellectual thinking in America, as embodied by Gross and Charlie Rose, is pretty lame. I mean, what percentage of those two's interviews are celebrities, for starters?

Extractions: NEW YORK - Fox News Channel traded accusations Wednesday with one of the producers of Bill OReillys show, with the woman alleging that the commentator had phone sex with her against her wishes three times. Fox in a claim of its own dismissed the sexual harassment complaint as a politically motivated extortion attempt.

Extractions: FOX News Channel host Bill O'Reilly responded to a Jewish caller to his radio show who objected to "Christmas going into schools" and explained that he "grew up with a resentment because I felt that people were trying to convert me to Christianity." O'Reilly told the caller that America is "a predominantly Christian nation" and that "if you are really offended, you gotta go to Israel." O'Reilly labeled the caller's concerns "an affront to the majority" and insisted that "the majority can be insulted, too." During his exchange with the caller, O'Reilly also mistakenly referred to "the seven candles" of Hanukkah. From the December 3 broadcast of the nationally syndicated The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly: CALLER: I agree with what you've been saying recently you're concerned about the secularization of Christmas and I'm concerned about the secularization of Jews and about the and Christmas going into schools.
Forward Newspaper Online I alluded to the above in Sunday s column, which described O Reilly s Kubrick s Unrealized Vision by AJ Goldmann. Forced March by Dan Kaufman http://www.forward.com/campaignconfidential/archives/001195.php
Extractions: From the New York Journal News, in which we used to have a column By PHIL REISMAN Bill O'Reilly of "The O'Reilly Factor" fame might not know this, or even care for that matter, but the principal members of a Manhattan law firm defending him in a $60 million sexual harassment lawsuit have close ties to the Democratic Party and have been generous contributors to various candidates over the years, among them Sen. Chuck Schumer, Rep. Nita Lowey and Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano. This is mentioned here in the interest of full disclosure (call it the "O'Reisman Factor") since O'Reilly's legal team has oddly accused plaintiff Andrea Mackris' lawyer, Benedict P. Morelli, of being such an ardent Democrat himself that he has a political agenda against their client.
