Extractions: The sun was not yet in the sky, but already crimson and orange streaks were piling up along the horizon. Six of us hunters were on our backs among the decoys, forcing ourselves to remain still. Our guide, Darrell Nieberding of Alberta Flyway Outfitters, was ten yards behind us in the 500-acre field to have a better perspective to call the shots. Already we could hear hundreds of Canada geese honking their morning hellos in the surrounding pea fields. Several flocks of 25 to 50 restless and eager birds were silhouetted against the beautiful dawn sky. Through the slits of the magnum goose decoy blind chair, I could see a flock of 75 mallards locked up to land in the V made by the spread of Canada goose decoys. The wind was picking up at our backs as daylight came in the 24-degree weather, causing a shiver to run down my spine. We had spread five dozen or so full-body Canada decoys in front, then set out a dozen magnum shells to help conceal our decoy blinds, then spread another several dozen photographic silhouette decoys behind us. Benelli was represented by Stephen McKelvain from Maryland. Also present for the field testing and hunt was Wolf Creek Productions, including Tom Kanalis, Tom Nichols and Dave Gruber, the host of Benelli's American Bird Hunter. Wolf Creek filmed segments for American Bird Hunter to be aired on the Outdoor Channel in 2001. Winchester was good enough to provide cases of their Supreme High Velocity Steel Shotshells for us to test in the new Benellis.

Extractions: View from the Top Editor's Note As I write in late August, many things in this election season remain unclear, both momentous and mundane. For starters, the presidential contest is a statistical dead heat. Despite the best efforts of the "non-affiliated" 527 arms of the campaigns, who make a virtue of character assassination (though the LA Times, in a moment of lucidity, did note that while groups like MoveOn were broadcasting personal attacks against the president, at least they weren't presenting patently false charges, like the lies put forth by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth about Kerry's war record), the red states are still red, the blue states are still blue, and the swing states are still swinging. And while I hope that local Trends prognosticator Gerry Celente is right in predicting a Kerry landslide, my crystal ball is still cloudy.

Extractions: The following is a list of introductions, forewords, afterwords, author's notes, etc., to the works of Philip José Farmer. Some of these are written by Farmer himself and some are written by other authors or editors. The ones that talk about the story behind the story, where the ideas came from, or facts about getting the story published are especially interesting. This is one reason we recommend all of the Phantasia Press printings. Unless otherwise noted, these extra writings appear in all printings of a book. Introduction to Riders of the Purple Wage by Harlan Ellison This appears in all the printings of DANGEROUS VISIONS (1967). In this gushing introduction Ellison extols Farmer's virtues as both person and writer and accurately predicts a Hugo award for this story. Afterword to Riders of the Purple Wage by Philip José Farmer This appears in all the printings of DANGEROUS VISIONS (1967). Farmer talks about first hearing about the Triple Revolution Document just before Harlan Ellison asked him to write a story for DANGEROUS VISIONS. He also talks about writing the story and parts he had to cut out to keep the story down to 30,000 words. Introduction to Sail On! Sail On!

Extractions: Editor: Philip W. Judge Availability: This video was the first I got from GMV Productions, back in spring of 1990. Having seen Nicholls in competitions telecast in the '80s, I was interested in seeing more. This video gave it to me, and made me a lifetime fan of Nicholls. I have watched it many times. Nicholls is from Barbados, and speaks with a charming Caribbean accent. The video starts with him posing in the studio, and we hear him in overvoice narration. He gives us knockout back and rear bicep poses against a blue background. Then it cuts to the interview proper, where Clive Jaques (who does the interviews for GMV) asks questions of Nicholls, who is sitting across from him with a microphone in his hands, and wearing a black tank top. Nicholls prefigured the bald look you see on many bodybuilders of African heritage these days. He has a moustache, a little unshaven hair below his lip, and a pierced ear. He's 5'9" at a weight of about 225, which he drops to 198 to compete as a light-heavyweight. He trusts the mirror more than a tape measure or weight scale. His skin tone is drumhead tight.

Extractions: January 10, 2003 In G Major (1975): Music by Maurice Ravel, Choreography by Jerome Robbins, Scenery and Costumes by Erté, Lighting by Ronald Bates, Pianist, Cameron Grant, Performed by Kyra Nichols and Philip Neal and the Company, Conducted by Andrea Quinn. Against a backdrop of an ocean scene, reminiscent of André Derain paintings, with flawless technique, Ms. Nichols, who has been a principal with New York City Ballet since 1979, created a lyrical, poetic, and highly stylized image. Her perfect pointe, her balance, and her persona all blended into this superb and energetic tour de force. Ms. Nichols is in amazing shape and has tremendous charisma as a performer. Mr. Neal was adept at his partnering, but did not seem to have the intensity and focus, so inherent in Ms. Nichols' performance. Ravel's concerto, which contains elements of jazz, was buoyant and bouncy, and Ms. Quinn conducted in a clean, crisp manner. The harp, piano and flute lent a surreal quality to this upbeat score. The Company, in colorfully striped, tank top bathing suits, danced with grace and dynamism.

Our Sponsors Fair Lawn News From the December-January 2001 Edition Letters to the Editor Traffic Light at Chandler Drive I have requested that a traffic light be put up on Fair Lawn Avenue and Chandler Drive. Nothing transpired. There are lots of senior citizens in the new Commons Complex and on Chandler Drive. Drivers whiz by with no regard for these people. They rush to get onto Route 208 North. There is an accident waiting to happen and a traffic light at that corner is a must. AOL User River Road Traffic Suggestions Since the River Road Improvement Corporation has been doing its part to improve the River Road area, I would like to suggest some small improvements to the intersections at Berdan and Fair Lawn Aves. At Fair Lawn Ave, I think that a left lane only turn should be painted on the road going southbound on River Road. And has anyone noticed that No Right On Red signs are being ignored? Foot Patrol police or someone should be more vigilant in enforcing this. Will it take an accident and death? Secondly, I think changes should be made in the positioning of "lane signs" at each corner of Berdan and River Road. They are blocked by other signs or trees. At what distance should these signs be clearly seen? The no turn on red signs are not clearly visible, especially, if you are right under them. Isn't there some rule governing their placement as well? I think that the rule of common sense is not being applied.
