Next LAP Twelve: Wo ma ns His tory Early Attitudes Toward Women Since early times women have been uniquely viewed as a creative source of human life. Historically, however, they have been considered not only intellectually inferior to men but also a major source of temptation and evil. In Greek mythology, for example, it was a woman, Pandora, who opened the forbidden box and brought plagues and unhappiness to mankind. Early Roman law described women as children, forever inferior to men. Early Christian theology perpetuated these views. St. Jerome, a 4th-century Latin father of the Christian church, said: "Woman is the gate of the devil, the path of wickedness, the sting of the serpent, in a word a perilous object." Thomas Aquinas, the 13th-century Christian theologian, said that woman was "created to be man's helpmeet, but her unique role is in conception . . . since for other purposes men would be better assisted by other men." The attitude toward women in the East was at first more favorable. In ancient India, for example, women were not deprived of property rights or individual freedoms by marriage. But Hinduism, which evolved in India after about 500 BC, required obedience of women toward men. Women had to walk behind their husbands. Women could not own property, and widows could not remarry. In both East and West, male children were preferred over female children.

Achelis In The Matriarchate; or, Woman in the Past , Gage writes, "In an able article on ethnology, Dr. Th. Achelis says: 'The complete agreement of accounts of tribes bearing no relationship to one another no longer leaves it a matter of doubt that blood relationship through a common mother must take the place of the patriarchal family as the fundamental form of development.' " Abigail Smith Adams Letter writer, women's rights advocate, farmer, and patriot. Educated by her grandmother and by her own readings from the family library, Adams took almost complete responsibility for running the family farm while her husband, John (who would later become President of the United States), was away attending to his political interests. Probably Abigail's best known letter implored her husband to "Remember the Ladies" by improving their legal rights in the new country.

Extractions: INTRODUCTION The History of Women is an indispensable research tool for all those interested in the study of women's history. Primary source materials, selected from the world's most important library holdings through 1920, have been brought together to create the most comprehensive microfilm collection ever assembled on the subject. The Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and the Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe College are the two renowned women's history archives that form the core of the microfilm collection. These extensive archives contain invaluable documentary evidence of women's individual and corporate activities. Other notable collections have contributed incomparable additional resources to the Smith-Radcliffe materials. The Jane Addams Hull House Library provided depth in its coverage of the settlement house movement, and of the activities of women in social reform in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The unparalleled private collection of Miriam Y. Holden offered an incisive look at Medieval and Western European women. New York Public Library and Boston Public Library added rare early imprints and periodicals on women outside America. And the Mcpherson Collection at Scripps College enriched the

Whether they were here a short or longer time depended upon whether they came only for their own needs or for trade or sale to others. The Shawnee Indians of this area were in and out and usually cooperative and friendly. The territorial government began to take note of the importance of the salines about 1800, and on March 3, 1803, congress authorized the leasing of the licks and spring. During the same year territorial Governor Harrison negotiated a treaty with the Indians and then leased the salines to a Capt. Bell of Ky. (See the Salines of Southern Ill. by Prof. Geo. W. Smith)
