Soft Condensed Matter Nanometre-scale ordering is well known to appear spontaneously when anisotropic organic moieties form liquid-crystalline phases. Though much less common, this behaviour is also observed for suspensions of anisotropic mineral nanoparticles and its study is currently a challenging and active research area in materials science . In this context, we have recently discovered that the low-dimensional layered solid state compound H Sb P O can be exfoliated in water to yield homogeneous, transparent suspensions of extended covalent sheets. Moreover, we found that these suspensions form a liquid-crystalline lamellar phase in a wide range of volume fractions Figure 51 ). In this phase, the mineral extended sheets are parallel and regularly stacked. In a small-angle X-ray scattering experiment on the beamline, a series of sharp peaks are observed and they can be indexed to the (00l) reflections of a lamellar structure ( Figure 52 ). Experiments on very dilute suspensions show that the form factor of the particles is the one of 2-dimensional (2-D) planar objects of at least 300 nm diameter. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction experiments show the existence of fairly thin diffraction lines which prove that the covalent sheets keep their (2-D) long-range atomic positional order even at high dilution (Figure 52 inset). Therefore, the mineral lamellar phase is very different from its organic counterparts that are usually comprised of liquid layers at such dilutions.

Extractions: by P.P.A.Narayanan So, you have your 3D engine (written in D3DIM or OpenGL) up and running, but you only have 2 or 3 cubes or spheres on the screen. Time to add some more complex models. The code below listed can be used to load a 3D Studio R3 or higher .3DS files. The code loads only the vertex data, face data and materials. It ignores all other information (like camera, light, keyframe data etc), since for my purposes, I only need the mesh loaded. If you think the code is written badly, I don't care! because it does the job and it was my desperate attempt to load some mesh into my D3DIM 3D Engine. But the code is (I hope!) simple and self explanatory for an average C/C++ programmer (or for that matter any programmer who can read C/C++ code). I have added some comments, see if it helps you. The code reads the .3ds file and creates a material list and mesh object list. The material list contains all the materials used by the mesh. The mesh contains references to the material in the material list (i.e the name). The flag present along with face data gives the order of the faces for calculating face normals. Only the first (I think!) 3 bits are used. The code ignores the flag because I don't need it, but if you figure out the use of that flag, please let me know. Ignoring the flag in some files inverts the face normals for some faces, so it becomes invisible. But other files it works okay.

Extractions: Regulation of Vascular Smooth Muscle Tone by Ion Channels and Lipid Mediators The major mission of our laboratory is to understand the mechanisms regulating the physiology of cerebral circulation in health and in disease conditions. Our research interests involve identification and characterization of different ion channel types and second messenger systems in vascular smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, endothelial cells, and in brain astrocytes. Studies in the laboratory mainly focus on the examination of the interaction between ion channels and lipid mediators as well as enzymatic pathways in regulating functions of the cerebral circulation. We are also interested in investigating the influence of disease states such as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus on ion channel function and second messenger systems that could account for alterations in the cerebral circulation in this disease state.

Extractions: Cajanus cajan : It's More than Just a Pulse Crop A variety of cultivars and the many ways they can be used in farming systems have made pigeonpea ( Cajanus cajan ) popular to small scale farmers. It is the major pulse crop of the semiarid tropics, has been used for centuries in intercropping systems, and is an ideal source of fodder, food and firewood in agroforestry systems. C. cajan (L.) Millsp. is a leguminous shrub that can attain heights of 5 m. Pigeonpea probably evolved in South Asia and appeared about 2000 BC in West Africa, which is considered a second major center of origin. The slave trade took it to the West Indies, where its use as bird feed led to the name "pigeonpea" in 1692 (van der Maesen 1986). Leaves are trifoliate and spirally arranged on the stem. Flowers occur in terminal or axillary racemes, are 2-3 cm long (Purseglove 1968), and are usually yellow, but can be flocked or streaked with purple or red. Pods are flat, usually green in color, sometimes hairy, sometimes streaked or colored dark purple, with 2-9 seeds/pod. Seeds are, widely variable in color, 6-9 nun in diameter, and weigh 4-25 g/100 seed (Sheldrake 1984).

Extractions: cheggp@langate.gsu.edu Our studies are centered on analytical chemistry applications with special emphasis on bioanalytical analyses. Two major analytical techniques are used: fluorescence spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis (CE). Our fluorescence spectroscopy research efforts are focused on the longer wavelength region of the electromagnetic spectrum, the near-infrared (NIR) region. The NIR region is advantageous due to the inherent low interference and the high molar absorptivities of the NIR absorbing chromophores. When NIR spectroscopy is coupled with the use of semiconductor lasers and detectors, an especially useful technique emerges. Semiconductor lasers have all the properties of other types of lasers with the added benefits of compactness, lower power consumption and low cost. We are currently studying several bioanalytical applications. These include, but are not limited to, NIR DNA sequencing; NIR fluorescence immunoassays, including fiber optic and conventional applications; DNA probe techniques; pH, metal ion and hydrophobicity determinations. Additionally, new environmentally important NIR analytical techniques are studied in our research group, including separation and bioremediation applications. Another component of our studies is the development of new biosensors using fiber optic techniques. Our CE research is mainly focused on new high sensitivity detection methods, bioseparations and NIR labeling techniques.

Extractions: Go February 2005 Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa We released the new MSN.com Homepage yesterday to match the new MSN Search release. I work on the Homepage team and wanted to give my thoughts. The great thing about this release was this was driven solely by customer requirements. All we wanted to do was make the page better. Compared to the old page, the new version is much faster. The page is lighter (about 2/3rds of what the old page was). We have also gone from a table based layout to a CSS powered layout. Granted, we were not able to hit complete compliance with standards. We still have some validation errors (about 130, the last time i checked) in the W3C Validator. We still have a couple of accessibility issues. All we ask for is for people to look at the page as a work in progress. I have seen some feedback that we should not have declared the doctype as XHTML Strict. If anything, we are closer to HTML 4.01. I agree. But our target is to get to XHTML strict. We realize we are not at a point where we can say we have achieved our goal. We will be working hard to get to that goal. Let us know how we are doing. Where are we slipping up? What do we need to fix? We are listening. By the way, we also did a new release of the
