Extractions: JAMES MCGOWAN (b. abt. 1784) and wife Mary Hart (b. abt. 1810) apparently left Coney Island bound for the US on the 'Britannia' around 1833-34 with their son Patrick. Two additional sons, JAMES and JOHN were born in New York City where the family lived until after 1850. When he opened an account with the Immigrant Bank in New York in 1852, Patrick named his parents and, also, recorded a brother, THOMAS, in addition to his younger brothers, James and John all of New York. This record is the only primary source of parentage and birth place which has surfaced. PATRICK listed his birthplace as 'Doverin Island, 2 miles from Sligo', Ire. alias, Dorran's Island better known as Coney Island The island was owned by George Dorran in 1788 and, though he gave it as his daughter's dowry, it was known as Dorran's Island in the 1800's. McGowan's still reside on Coney Island and, it is believed, share ancestors with these McGowan lines. By 1854, James and Mary Hart McGowan had left the bustling city of New York and were residing on a quarter section of rolling hill farmland in Audrain County, Missouri. They, undoubtedly, experienced periodic homesickness for Ireland's abundant rainfall which produced the emerald greenery as they dwelt amid the wind swept dry prairies grasses more often dusty brown than even a yellow-green. Material prepared by Dorothy McGowan and Karen McGowan, Jan. 2000.

Originally the pictures were taken as slides. Some of the pictures the quality is good, and others are just marginal, as the dyes have faded over time. The Kodak Slides have held up under the test of time. Agfa film and Fuji film did not hold up very well. This is page 1 of the collection I will be putting on the web. Eventually I want to have a a photo section for each time period the ship was in commission. ( Each page will contain 30 or more pictures ) There is a separate section for the pictures taken at annual reunions, To see them you will have to enter thru the Reunion Association page. The first picture in this series is of John R. Anderson. John was given this honor because I tried in vain for many years to keep a promise to him. The McGowan is also on another site, unfortunately I had great difficulty having the webmaster return my emails. The purpose of which was to have "Andy's" picture included on the site. So if you have pictures that you would like to have on the web of your Navy days, mail them to me. and we will do the rest for you. Don't forget to provide names, dates, and the place they were taken.

Emporia State University University Advancement The Distinguished Alumni award is the highest honor that can be granted to an alumnus or alumna of Emporia State University by the ESU Alumni Association. Awarded each fall during Homecoming, it recognizes the outstanding professional accomplishments of ESU's finest graduates. Since the inception of the award program in 1960, 182 alumni have received the award. Candidates are nominated for the Distinguished Alumni award by alumni and current and retired ESU faculty. As much information as possible is gathered on each candidate. The information is evaluated and an initial selection is made by a committee representing alumni and faculty. The Alumni Association Board of Directors approves or makes final selection of those who will receive the award. A maximum of five alumni can receive the award in a given year. Past Distinguished Alumni have included teachers, research scholars, humanitarians, administrators, public servants, doctors, lawyers, and leaders in business, industry, and the military. All are respected in their professions and community. Most important, they are Emporia State University graduates who have given ESU a rich heritage.

Most of the participants in the first three reunions were members of the Men's Glee Club at Dickinson between 1952 and 1970. However, a few were graduates representing classes from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s who sang with all male vocal groups that functioned on the campus during those decades. In 1996 a male vocal ensemble called the Octals was organized at Dickinson. Some of its members began to participate in the reunions beginning in June of that year. More recently, Men's Glee Club/Octals Reunion participants have included some tenors and basses who sang with other campus groups while they were undergraduates at Dickinson. Although a few cities had pager-like devices for their police and firefighters as early as 1921, ordinary citizens couldn't use them. The creator of the first commercial pager service was Sherman C. Amsden (1889-1958), a native of Michigan who served as a U.S. Army Air Force pilot in both world wars. One night in the early 1920s, Amsden had a family emergency and needed his doctor immediately, but the physician couldn't be reached; the doctor was not in his office and he couldn't afford a secretary to answer his phone. This experience inspired Amsden, then living in New York City, to start one of the first telephone answering companies, Telanserphone. Originally intended just for doctors, here's how the Telanserphone service worked: A subscriber who expected to be away from his telephone (playing golf, seeing a movie, taking a shower, etc.) would notify Telanserphone. If anyone called during the subscriber's absence, a Telanserphone operator would write down a message. The subscriber could then call the company at any time or from any location to hear the messages he missed.

Nyd speaks most strongly of pause, the hallmark of the both the timid and the patient, and is often interpreted as foretelling a delay in the effect of other runes that it accompanies. Fortunately, even where there is misery and danger there are valuable lessons to be learned - the trick is to learn them before you are overtaken by despair. Birth Mates
