Extractions: At the 1995 Annual General Meeting, the Fellows agreed to the proposal of a suite of medals recognising excellence in the sciences and technologies covered by the Academy. It agreed to establish awards in engineering sciences; social sciences and biomedical and health sciences. It also agreed to change the areas of science for which the Hutton and Hector medals are awarded, the change to be effective in 1996. The Hutton Memorial Fund was established in 1909 to support the award of the Hutton Medal and grants for the encouragement of research in New Zealand zoology, botany, or geology. The medal is awarded not more than once every three years, to those who have received the greater part of their education in New Zealand or who have resided in New Zealand for not less than ten years, for research with a distinct bearing on these fields.
