Ross Roy Collection of John Masefield is on display at the library through March 8. The collection was donated by Roy, distinguished professor emeritus of English, in 1999. The exhibit is located on the Mezzanine level of the library. It is free and open to the public during all regular library hours. John Masefield Masefield (1878-1967), now best known for his sea poems Salt-Water Ballads and his narrative poem The Everlasting Mercy , was a dominant figure in early 20th-century British poetry and poet laureate from 1930 until his death.

His mother died when he was six, and his father a year or so later, and he was brought up by his uncle and aunt. After a period at sea from the age of thirteen, he worked at menial tasks in the States for two years before returning to Britain in 1897. He then set about realising his aspirations to become a writer. He contributed to a number of periodicals and published his first book of poems, Salt Water Ballads , in 1902. In 1911 he published his first major work

Masefield himself did not think he was worthy of the appointment, however, upon the recommendation of the British Prime Minister, King George V appointed Masefield, who remained in the office until his death in 1967. The only other person to remain in the office of Laureate for a longer period was Tennyson. Masefield was born on June 1, 1878, in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England. After his father's death he was looked after by an uncle. Young Masefield wanted to be a merchant marine officer. At 13 he boarded the training ship Conway moored in the river Mersey. After two and a half years on the school ship he was apprenticed aboard a sailing ship that was bound for Chile by way of Cape Horn. In Chile he became ill and had to return to England by steamer. He left the sea and spent several years living in the United States, working chiefly in a carpet factory. At one time, in 1895, to be exact, he worked for a few months as a sort of third assistant bar-keeper and dish-washer in Luke O'Connor's saloon, the Columbia Hotel, in New York City. The place is still there on the corner of Sixth and Greenwich Avenue s. He later wrote about that period of his life in an autobiographical work, 'In the Mill', published in 1941.

    Extractions: Biography of John Masefield John Edward Masefield (1 June 1878 – 12 May 1967), was a British poet and writer, and Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967. He is remembered as the author of the classic children's novels The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights and a great deal of memorable poetry, including "Sea Fever", from his anthology Saltwater Ballads Masefield was born at Ledbury, in Herefordshire, a rural area of England. After an education at the King's School in Warwickshire and on the school ship HMS Conway, he became a junior officer on an ocean liner. After being taken ill, he was forced to return home in 1897, and his literary career began. His first collection of poetry was Saltwater Ballads , published in 1902. During World War I, though old enough to be exempted from military service, he went to the Western Front as a medical orderly, later publishing his own account of his experiences. He settled in Oxford, inheriting the title of Poet Laureate from a neighbour, Robert Bridges, in 1930. However, it is generally considered that his best work was written before this date. After his death, he was interred in the Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey.
