Extractions: The MacClintock mss., 1908-1928, are travel diaries of William Darnall MacClintock, 1858-1936, professor of English, written in the form of letters to his family. Career: Born July 28, 1858, Elizaville, Kentucky, son of Alexander and Cornelia (Darnall) MacClintock; 1878, A.B. Kentucky Wesleyan; 1882, A.M. Johns Hopkins University; 1892-1925, professor of English at the University of Chicago; 1925, appointed professor emeritus; 1886, married Lucia Porter Lander; children: Lander, Paul, Hilda, Elizabeth; died April 21, 1936. In 1908 and 1912, William Darnall MacClintock was sent by the University of Chicago and the U.S. government to lecture to American teachers in the Philippines and to study educational conditions there. He kept a travel diary of the trips in the form of letters to his wife and children. On both trips he sailed form San Francisco via Hawaii and Japan to the Philippines, stopping in China on the return trip. From September 11, 1927 to April 24, 1928 he and Julia MacClintock spent the winter touring Europe, visiting England, France, Italy, Austria and Germany. Again he kept a travel diary in the form of letters to his children.
