Highly intelligent for his age, Macaulay was a passionate reader by the age of three. Macaulay began writing poems about historical figures at the early age of eight. Much of his writings were used as stepping stones for his later publication of the Lays of Ancient Rome (Cavendish, 53). Macaulay attended Trinity College, in Cambridge, and furthered his political views and service as a missionary. He began to strengthen his resolve for utilitarianism and was influenced by Jeremy Bentham and Joseph Priestley. Macaulay is best known for his History of England , published in five volumes. After graduating, Babington went to work as a lawyer. During his early career years, there was not much time for Macaulay to write, as he was caught up in the politics of the British Nation. Though a liberal and an intellectual of a very high order, Macaulay failed to comprehend the problems of the Indians under British rule. Ignorant as he was of Indian languages and institutions and unacquainted with the problems of the general people of the country, his scathing remarks about the character of the Indians tended to be populist and chauvinistic. In spite of his great intellectual attainments, he could not rise above the racist attitude to non-European cultures. Ironically, today Macaulay is mentioned by South Asian scholars not so much for his great contribution to the development of the Indian Penal Code but for his negative attitude to oriental languages and cultures, an attitude that lacked understanding and sensibility. Next SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY History of British Rule and Colonization in India British Education in India As has been noted by numerous scholars of British rule in India, the physical presence of the British in India was not significant. Yet, for almost two centuries, the British were able to rule two-thirds of the subcontinent directly, and exercise considerable leverage over the Princely States that accounted for the remaining one-third. While the strategy of divide and conquer was used most effectively, an important aspect of British rule in India was the psychological indoctrination of an elite layer within Indian society who were artfully tutored into becoming model British subjects. This English-educated layer of Indian society was craftily encouraged in absorbing values and notions about themselves and their land of birth that would be conducive to the British occupation of India, and furthering British goals of looting India's physical wealth and exploiting it's labour. In 1835, Thomas Macaulay articulated the goals of British colonial imperialism most succinctly:

He was professor of political economy at Oxford and would rise to the position of archbishop of Dublin. He is remembered as a critic of the use of dogma in theology. He also knew how to read as he demonstrated with this review of Jane Austen's last two novels. I will quote a very small part of the much longer essay.
