Extractions: Possibilities include: An examination of Western civilization's development of the idea of a distinct gay identity (the "homosexual man") near the end of the nineteenth century, as seen through the works of France's first "gay novelist," Pierre Loti. Loti and the art of his times: How his novels reflect various trends in contemporary French painting Henri Rousseau's portrait of Pierre Loti "A fondness for cats in men [was seen as one of several] manifestations of a pathological condition, a kind of psychological hermaphroditism tellingly but not essentially expressed by the preference for a 'normal' member of one's own sex as a sexual partner." David Halperin, One Hundred Years of Homosexuality The idea of homosexuality, which is to say of the existence of distinct and different sexualities, is relatively recent in Western culture; most scholars, starting with Michel Foucault, date its origins to sometime in the nineteenth century when, for various reasons, psychiatrists and criminologists began to write about "homosexual men." As you might image, most of what they wrote was very negative. Nonetheless, their writings created in the minds of men who felt attraction to other men the new idea that, if they experienced this attraction, they were in some very fundamental way

Extractions: Much of high school and lower-level college foreign language teaching these days focuses on the study of the cultures where those languages are spoken. Literature, though it once figured prominently in these classes, now receives less attention. Convinced that it still has important things to offer students even at these earlier levels of study, but cognizant of the change in focus of modern foreign language teaching, I have created this website to make available to teachers and students at those levels a significant full-length work of French literature, Pierre Loti's Pêcheur d'Islande , in a format that emphasizes and facilitates the presentation of French culture. In addition to dealing with the beginnings of the French involvement in Vietnam that eventually led to our own embroilment there and that gives the work a contemporary relevance, Pêcheur d'Islande contains a rich picture of life in late nineteenth-century Brittany. Many particularly unique and interesting elements of Breton culture figure prominantly in the novel, allowing for much discussion of cultural issues, including those of diversity and the problems that result when a minority culture attempts to function inside a majority culture. This work is also well suited to late adolescents and readers in their early twenties, as it presents the lives of several young Bretons who are coping with issues common to anyone of that age: unrequited love, the assertion of one's independance, the problems posed by elderly relatives, etc.

Extractions: Descriptions of the sites cited above: Kariye Museum: Kariye Mosque attracts much attention because of its rich mosaics and frescoes. The art of painting in frescoes and mosaics were the indications of a new Byzantine art movement which was parallel to Italian Renaissance started by Giotto (1266-1337). Inside you can see beautiful mosaics representing events in the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The frescos relate to death and resurrection. Today the church is a museum, no religious services take place. Eyup and Its Mosque: Eyup is one of the areas founded outside the ramparts, after Istanbul's conquest by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. It is named after the prophet Muhamed's flag bearer, the first person who accepted him in his house after the migration from Mekke to Medine. He is thought to be killed in the exact same area, at Eyup, during a war. Eyup, after Mekke, Medine and Jerusalem, is accepted as the 4th most important religious place to visit for musulmans. The area is also has a famous mosque. Cafe Pierre Loti: Nostalgia at French writer Pierre Loti's (1850-1923) favorite cafe in Eyup... Cafe Pierre Loti is named after the famous 'turc lover' frenchman whose real name is Julien Viaud. During his stay in Turkey, the writer loved
Extractions: Index of Third-Party Works Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde, born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, was the second son of Sir William Robert and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde. At the age of ten, Wilde entered the well-known Portora Royal School, where he excelled in Greek studies. His interest in Greek continued at Trinity College, Dublin, where John Mahaffy, an eminent Greek scholar who later took Wilde on a tour of Italy, was his tutor. Wilde was awarded a scholarship in classics from Magdalene College, Oxford, which he entered in 1874. During his fourth year at Oxford, Wilde won the prestigious Newdigate Prize for imitative poetry with a verse praising Ravenna, a city he had visited with Mahaffy and the burial site of Dante. In addition to his studies, Wilde began to develop his role as poseur and aesthete. Wilde received his BA in 1878 and, after an additional year at Oxford, went to London where he began writing. In 1880 Wilde published Vera; or, The Nihilists, and in 1881 he was hired by Richard D'Oyly Carte to boost Gilbert and Sullivan's new opera Patience in America by means of a lecture tour. Dressed in black velvet and a full length fur coat, he spoke on the new aestheticism from New York to San Francisco. He met with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, and Jefferson Davies, among others.

Extractions: Syllabus Seminars: Most seminars will be introduced by a student presentation. Because presentations form a crucial element in the teaching and learning process, it is essential that they should be substantial (20-25 minutes), well-informed, and provocative. Each presentation should be accompanied by a photocopied handout (ideally one page of A4) giving some background information but chiefly the outlines of the argument. Each time there is a student presentation, another student will be responsible for leading the discussion, and someone else will be nominated to produce a summary of the presentation and (especially) discussion, and to present it at the beginning of the next weeks seminar. This will provide a link between seminars, which will be especially useful when successive topics are paired.

Extractions: Princeton University Library Mary Chavelita Bright was born Chavelita Dunne in 1859, in Australia, eldest daughter of Captain John J. Dunne, an Irishman who served in the Maori War in New Zealand and who politically allied himself with the Irish Home Rule party. Captain Dunne's family often lived by their wits because of his constant indebtedness, and Chavelita took on family responsibilities early in life. A "free spirit" who scorned convention, she traveled to Norway to live with Henry Higginson, a married clergyman, in 1887. In the two years before Higginson's death, Chavelita leaned Norwgian, reading and absorbing the ideas of Ibsen, Strindberg, Olaf Hansson, and Knut Hamsun. Returning to London in 1890, she translated Hamsun's Hunger , beginning her literary career. She married George Egerton Clairmonte, a Newfoundlander, "idle and penniless" in 1891. As her biographer, Terence deVere White, notes, "She was to take [Clairmonte's] first two name as a non-de-plume... the only provision that he ever made for her... Her elopement with Higginson gave her the material for a book; her second husband, by his dependence on her, gave her the motive to employ it." In 1893
