Magyar The Doctor Dolittle series, a masterpiece of Hugh Lofting (1886-1947), has been the popular reading of children not only in England, but also in Hungary. In my early years I had the possibility of reading three of the 14 Dolittle books /1/ and the honest, stocky Doctor with the top hat has remained for me ever since the most likeable man of the whole world. It is therefore understandable if certain correspondences and similarities, which may cast some light on the origins of the Dolittle story, have aroused my interest: these are the things I would like to discuss. Doctor Dolittle's "father", Hugh Lofting, did not intend to be a writer: he had previously worked as engineer in Africa, then Cuba, later wrote humorous sketches in New York. World War I saw Lofting return to Europe. In 1916 he joined the Irish Guards, serving in France and Belgium, then was wounded and discharged from service. The character of Dolittle emerged first in his letters written home from the battlefield to his children, Elizabeth and Colin. /2/ Later he wrote about Dolittle as follows: He (Dolittle) was to be an eccentric country physician with a bent for natural history, and a great love of pets, who finally decides to give up his human practice for the more difficult, more sincere and, for him, more attractive therapy of the animal kingdom. He was challenged by the difficulty of the workâfor obviously it requires a much cleverer brain to become a good animal doctor (who must first acquire all animal languages and physiologies) than it does not take care of the mere human hypochondriac.
