Later criticism has changed that point of view, however, by pointing to such unifying factors as wine, which is used as a recurring theme throughout (Lazarillo steals it; it is used for washing his wounds; he sells it). Then there is the "initiation" in which Lazarillo's head is slammed against a stone statue of a bull. Later the blind man smashes his own head against a stone post as poetic justice is meted out. Finally, Lazarillo's mother will "lie at the sideor stay on the side of good people," and as the novel ends Lazaro decides to do the same. Claudio Guillen, a modern critic, has noted that time is also a unifying factor in this novel.     Extractions: La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes: y de sus fortunas y adversidades E l Lazarillo de Tormes es una novela del tipo picaresca aparecida por allá de 1554 en una España sumergida en literatura de caballeros y espadachines románticos, a la obra nunca se le conoció su autor quien posiblemente prefirió permanecer en el anonimato por el tipo de crítica que hacía al clero, y en efecto, esta obra fue prohibida por el estado español y catalogada por la inquisición dentro del Índice del Purgatorio. No fue hasta 1573 cuando se autorizó su publicación con la omisión de los capítulos cuatro y cinco así como algunos párrafos de otros que la santa inquisición decidió censurar. Esta versión incompleta fue impresa una y otra vez hasta el siglo XIX cuando España por fin permitió a sus habitantes conocer la obra completa. Sobre su autoría se se dicen algunos nombres como el monje Juan de Ortega, el escritor dramático Sebastián de Orozco y el humanista Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, aunque seguramente nunca lo sabremos con exactitud y lo mejor sería dejarla como anónima.
