Extractions: ) J. W. Rush was born in Fayette county. Pa., in 1822, coming to Ill. in 1854, when that state was thought of as "away out west." In 1862 at the age of 40 he enlisted in the 129 Reg. Ill. Vol., going with Sherman in his famous march "to the sea," and engaging in active service in the last battle of the civil war. In 1872 he again determined to try his fortune in a new state, consequently landed in York county in June of that year, under the law lately coming into effect giving the soldier 160 acres of land. He homesteaded that amount on Sec. 18, Twp. 9, R. 1, W. When he and his wife and children proceeded to make a home in the best sense of the word. Mr. Rush had brought with him from Pennsylvania, a love for the fruit tree, and his was one of the first orchards in the county. Several years ago ( ) he moved to McCool and now lives at Blue Vale with his daughter, Mrs. S. S. Deffenbaugh, his wife having died some years ago. Mr. Rush celebrated his 90th birthday recently, and is, we think, the oldest homesteader living in the county at this time.

Some minor editing for editorial consistency and spelling WAS made, as well as spelling out of directions (N, SE, NNW, etc), and numbers less than ten. Unless noted otherwise, indicated population figures are from the 1990 census. (In the next year these should be updated to the 2000 census.) Many of these listed locations may be just rural post offices, country churches schools, forts, stage stations, crossroads stores, mills or river fords, rather than what we normally consider towns. The reason for that is that many of these types of locations had small communities grow up around the main business. If you know of any Missouri ghost town location not listed on these pages, please contact THE LIST if you are a member, or me if not. I will pass on the information to THE LIST.

Extractions: Frontier Times Magazine Vol 11 No. 1 - October, 1933 Contents of this volume: Ellis P. Bean, a Bold Pioneer In the year 1800, Ellis P. Bean, then a boy of eighteen, possessed with a spirit of adventure, left his father's home at Bean's station, Tennessee, and reaching Natchez on the Mississippi, enlisted in the trading company of Philip Nolan, then en route for Texas. The company consisted of twenty-two men, having in charge a large amount of goods. Reaching Texas, and while at a point between the Trinity and Brazos rivers they were attacked by a body of Spanish troops. Nolan and his men made a desperate resistance, but were finally overpowered. Thirteen, including Nolan, were killed, and the remaining nine, with Bean, made prisoners. The prisoners were taken to San Antonio, and there confined several months. Thence they were sent to Chihuahua, by way of Monclova, and there chained and imprisoned. Thus they were kept three years, when they were allowed the privileges of the city limits, and labor for themselves. Bean had learned the hatting business, and he followed it for a year in Chihuahua, when his longing to see his native land induced him, with two comrades, to run away and endeavor to reach the United States. The three were arrested near El Paso, severely lashed, and again ironed and imprisoned. Once more he made a desperate attempt to escape, killing several soldiers, and taking the road to California. This time he had traveled 300 miles, when he was once more recaptured and carried back

Extractions: Home Up Mr Block (W T) my son is doing some research for a High School class that has led him to your website. His topic is focused on his ancestors - Samuel and Solomon Parr - who lived in the Galveston Bay area. I was wondering if you would be so kind to send us some Internet links to sites where we can gather some information about these two people OR possible if you have gathered any data during your research if you could send a little to him. Thank you very much Ken Edgein 856-354-1619 in Cherry Hill New Jersey thanks for your reply Wow, found your site by accident. Haven't read much of it as of it, but am looking forward to using it for history, as we home educate. Looks like lots of great history. What caught my attention is the section on Adrian J. and Agatha Elings family, who immigrated from Holland to America and ending up in Montana. My husband is a descendant of theirs, a great grandson. We live in Montana, within a few miles of where A.J. lived while here. If you would like more information on this lineage please reply, as my mother in law has some information. Most in the article is correct, however their is some misspelling of names and some other minor information that is incorrect. I love geneology, so would greatly like to be in contact with one of the writers of the article. My husband is Robert Gordon after his father and we named a son Dirk. Sincerely
