Extractions: "May Live and Die a Miner" The 1864 Clarksville Diary of James W. Virtue Gary Dielman, editor F or decades, the Oregon Trail led explorers, mountain men, and emigrants through eastern Oregon until finally, in 1861, the discovery of gold provided the catalyst for whites to settle in Baker Valley. In the history of Baker County, the Oregon Trail and gold mining are linked dramatically on Flagstaff Hill at the eastern edge of Baker Valley, where visitors to the National Oregon Trail Interpretive Center discover that the hilltop is also occupied by the historic Flagstaff Mine. James W. Virtue in 1869, while he was sheriff of Baker County Courtesy Baker County Library Clarksville was located in southern Baker County about three miles above the confluence of Clarks Creek and Burnt River. The creek and town derived their names from a miner named Clark who, in 1862, accidentally shot himself near the creek. A member of Clark's party discovered gold while camped there waiting for his recovery. Courtesy Baker County Library What was it like to be a part of this frenetic life of prospecting, staking claims, digging ditches, and living in primitive camps in the West in the early 1860s? In the summer of 1863, twenty-six-year-old James W. Virtue, a native of Ireland, was about to find out. Little did the novice miner then realize that in the last year of his life the governor and legislature of Oregon would honor him as one of the preeminent mining experts in the Northwest. Nor could he have known that 140 years later the diary in which he recorded his thoughts and activities of daily life in a remote Clarksville mining camp would be an object of historical interest.

Extractions: Click Here to Return to Index Schools In The River Communities To begin our history of schools in the county in this twentieth century, let us look at the schools in the river communities, organized earlier than the township schools and the more isolated rural communities. We will begin with Aliquippa. The present Aliquippa School District, originally the Woodlawn School District, was organized on June 7, 1909. The borough of Woodlawn was incorporated from Hopewell Township in 1908, its population drawn to the area by the establishment of the Aliquippa Works of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation along the Ohio River. According to historian Ivagean Ferry, from whose "Brief History of Education in Aliquippa" much of the information in this account has been taken, two districts had been in operation in the area - the Logstown Independent District and the Aliquippa School District. In 1928, Aliquippa was re-named West Aliquippa when it consolidated with the town of Woodlawn, the larger borough, which at that time took the Indian name of Aliquippa." The Woodlawn District in 1909 elected its first Board of School Directors: H. J. Johns, president; John T. Bell, secretary; W. G. Cochran (a non-member), treasurer; and members, C. H. Dinsmore, G. Walter Prosser, G. W. Gray, and J. H. Robb.

Extractions: Ashmead, Albert S. An Ancient Peruvian Effigy Vase Exhibiting Disease of the Foot. American Anthropologist. July-September, 1907 Vol. 9 (3): 738-740. Ashmeads article discusses the implications of the features of a Pre-Colombian water bottle from the Pachacamac Graveyard in Peru with references to his own past research and a brief discussion of related subject matter depicted in ancient Peruvian art. A photograph of the object from two angles accompanies the article. A large sphere forms the body of the bottle. A much smaller sphere with ears and incised facial features and a cylindrical spout opening on top represents the head. The small cylindrical curved handle of the bottle connects the back of the head to the top of the bottles body. The figure represented holds one pockmarked foot in its hands, sole pointed upwards. He also devotes a few paragraphs to the issue of amputation in Peruvian society, linking the amputation of the feet to the disease uta, a cure still used in Peru at the time of the article. He cites research into other types of amputation as forms of punishment, noting that other visual arts depict the loss of an ear, a hand, but never the feet, as punishment for a crime. He says that even if people lost hands to the disease, this would not be depicted on water bottles, often found at grave sites (perhaps as water holders for the dead), since an individual needed his or her hands to eat and drink on his or her final journey to the moon. Ashmead ends his article with an open invitation to other European anthropologists to inform him if they find evidence of mortuary pottery depicting figures with their hands amputated.
