Il padre, appartenente alla piccola aristocrazia polacca, era impegnato nella lotta di liberazione della sua terra dalla sudditanza zarista e fu presto condannato allesilio per cui con la famiglia condusse una vita errabonda; il giovane Joseph perse presto entrambi i genitori, ma durante la fanciullezza ebbe modo di apprendere il francese, linglese e, naturalmente, il polacco; fu un lettore onnivoro, con una profonda predilezione per i libri di avventure sul mare, probabilmente era stato imprintato da I lavoratori del mare di Hugo tradotto dal padre in polacco. Fra le sue prime letture vi fu anche lopera di Alfred Wallace Larcipelago malese (1869) e Il viaggio di Darwin. A soli diciassette anni si arruolò nella marina mercantile francese e nel 1878 ottenne limbarco in battelli inglesi, con cui percorse le acque comprese del sud est asiatico fra Singapore e il Borneo; nel 1890 risalì le acque del fiume Congo, esperienza che sarà fonte di ispirazione per il suo capolavoro, Cuore di Tenebra ; nel 1896 prese congedo dalla marina, ritirandosi ad Ashford nel Kent.

Chance , in 1913, was Conrad's first financial and popular success. By the end of his life Conrad was established as one of the leading "Modernists," and by the 1940s he was considered one of the most important British writers of the twentieth century, a position he still enjoys today. From Polish to French to English "Gorgeous word-painting" is how one critic describes Conrad's early prose, referring to such passages as his evocation of exotic eastern islands: "clothed in their dark garments of leaves, in a great hush of silver and azure, where the sea without murmur meets the sky in a ring of magic stillness." It is a minor wonder that Conrad came to be so much admired for his style and powerful command of the English, his third language. His father was a student of English literature, and as a boy Conrad read Shakespeare and Dickens in translation, but he did not learn English until joining the British merchant marine in his late teens. Conrad was proud of his Polish heritage, but even late in life French was the language he was most comfortable with. It is amazing to realize that Conrad composed his fiction by thinking in Polish, translating his thoughts into French, and then recording them on paper in English.

In his famous preface to THE NIGGER OF THE 'NARCISSUS' (1897) Conrad crystallized his often quoted goal as a writer: "My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you fell - it is, above all, to make you see. That - and no more, and it is everything." Among Conrad's most popular works are LORD JIM (1900) and HEART OF DARKNESS (1902).
