Anonymous Although frequently called the "information superhighway," the Internet is actually a precursor to the multi-network that will some day provide universal access to digital communication services around the globe. It has been likened to a highway system because it functions much like a network of interstate highways. In reality, the Internet is a "network of networks," connecting a growing number of regional sites to an intercontinental electronic grid that today encompasses, according to 1996 statistics from the Matrix Information and Services (MIDS) , 13.4 million individual servers in more than 100 countries around the world. In the (January 1997), Robin Murphy, of InterNIC Information and Education Services, reports that "over 80,000 new domain names were registered by InterNIC and Network Solutions, Inc. each month by the last quarter of 1996." The Internet came about as a logical extension of the massive highway building campaign which took place during the 1950's when the cold war was at its height. In the name of national defense, the government underwrote the cost of constructing a system of interstate highways linking major cities across the country, and thereby allowing the military to quickly reinforce any front in case the United States was ever attacked.

The Internet provides access to valuable information resources which may not be available elsewhere. The unique, unregulated nature of the Internet requires that users exercise judgment regarding information accessible on various internet sites. The Library does not filter access to Internet sites but may monitor patron usage. Parents have the responsibility to monitor their children's use of Library resources. Some patrons may deem some material unsuitable for viewing by their children. We suggest that parents concerned about access issues become familiar with the Library's policy and join their children in using the Library's Internet services. The Children's Room can provide parents with written materials to help them in guiding their children's Internet use. Patrons should be sensitive about viewing or leaving material on the screens, whether on their own laptops or on the Library PCs, which may be upsetting to other patrons. Because of expected demand for Internet access, the Library has instituted the following rules.

First of all, I would like to thank the people at Infinity Development Systems (formerly AIRS, which lives on in the domain name) for permitting me to use their computers and `uunet' access. I would also like to thank Richard Stallman rms at gnu.org for founding the Free Software Foundation, and John Gilmore gnu at toad.com for writing the initial version of gnuucp (based on uuslave) which was a direct inspiration for this somewhat larger project. Chip Salzenberg chip at tct.com has contributed many patches. Franc, ois Pinard pinard at iro.umontreal.ca tirelessly tested the code and suggested many improvements. He also put together the initial version of this manual. Doug Evans contributed the zmodem protocol. Marc Boucher marc at CAM.ORG
