Extractions: :Number of times this page has been accessed since 4 July, 1998 We propose a new concept for libraries, which is named Intelligent Library (I-LIB) . The I-LIB is a concept of libraries which can auto-tune for own performances without setting parameters by users. Especially, now we define the I-LIB concept for numerical calculation. I-LIB should have the following characteristics: It has less parameter interface, It tunes calculation kernels automatically, It tunes communication method automatically (if we use parallel architectures), and It selects algorithms automatically. We call such numerical libraries I-LIB for numerical calculation. We are now developing the following numerical libraries based on the concept of I-LIB. CG method GMRES method Skyline method Gaussian elimination Standard eigenvalue problem solver (Symmetric, Dense) Generalized eigenvalue problem solver (Symmetric, Dense)

Extractions: English / Toward Meaning (Translated by Hiroaki Sato) Preface Takano Kikuo was born in 1927 on Sado, the Z-shaped detachment in the Japan Sea, off the coast of Niigata. Legendary for its gold mines and exiles, the island was famously evoked in Basho's hokku with grandeur and mystery:"Rough sea:lying toward Sado the River of Heaven." In recent years it attracted attention as the place where the last specimen of the Japanese crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) died. Takano came of age in the last phase of the Second World War when Japan was going through unprecedented destruction and death under massive U.S. air-raids. Hoping to avoid the draft, he chose to study civil engineering at Utsunomiya Agricultural College. With luck the war came to an end before the draft question came up, but the years that followed were no more free of angst and forebodings. When asked years later to write an essay on"By the Seashore,"one of his most frequently anthologized poems, he recalled: The postwar years were when those who had failed to die tried to live, always apologetic to those who had died and ashamed. The meaning of one's own "being" was fiercely questioned. Some of us threw ourselves onto the train tracks, hastily like someone who didn't make it in time, without a single word of apology, or into the lake, carrying The Sickness Unto Death with us.
