Extractions: Eugene grew up in Clinton, MO, where he worked in his fathers shoe store while attending Clinton High School and Clinton Academy. In 1892, while a student at the Academy, he joined a group of friends (the gang in his diaries) to become one of the six founding members of Phi Lambda Epsilon fraternity. In 1895, he entered Central College (now Central Methodist University), Fayette, MO, and earned a BA which was awarded in 1898. He then moved on to the University of Chicago for an MA in History the following year. After teaching several years, he twice took sabbaticals to work on his PhD at Harvard; he completed the course work but was unable to finish the degree program. Violette began his long teaching career as an Assistant in History during his senior year at Central. Upon completion of his Masters, he was appointed Acting Associate Professor of History at the University of Missouri for one year, then accepted a permanent position as Professor of European History and Head of the Department of History and Government at the First District Normal School (now Truman State University) in Kirksville. Except for a years leave to teach at Washington University, St Louis, 1920-21, he remained in Kirksville from 1900 until 1923 when he went to Louisiana State University as Associate Professor of History. He was Professor of English History there at the time of his death in 1940.

Extractions: I began this inventory marking rows along with the grave but discovered that not all the cemetery has markers anymore, and in particular the old section. So, for general purposes the stones are listed clockwise, from the caretaker's house around the perimeter and then across the road from the caretaker's back up and down the rows through the old section. Residents of Sandhole Cemetery, Rockville Centre, New York Survey of the Cemetery headstones by George Carman , June 1997. Direction of survey was from the caretakers house, clock-wise around the perimeter and then from the caretakers house east, row by row, starting from the first row south and then back and forth north to south through each row. Persons or organizations desiring to use the information contained within in my web pages MUST obtain my written consent. All information is for Non-Profit use only. This sizable cemetery has regular care and is in good shape. The West Union Lutheran Church and Cemetery are located near the southern part of Lake Maria, in rural Carver County, near the towns of Gotha and the West Union settlement area. The cemetery sign states it was founded in 1858. This church's congregation is closely related to the members of the East Union Lutheran Church Congregation In the "Compendium of History and Biography of Carver and Hennepin Counties, Minnesota" [1915] edited by Maj. R.I. Holcombe and William H. Bingham, they wrote: 'West Union Evangelical Lutheran Church, in the northeastern corner of the township, was organized by Rev. P.Carlson and a frame church was built before the Civil War.' In the Carver County Historical Publication 'In the Tracks of the Swedish Settlers in Carver County', as written by Susanna Thilquist, in 1988,'... the West Union congregation was organized in December 1858, about six months after East Union. The Union Settlement had expanded rapidly, especially to the west and south. The people in the west wished to have a closer church ... The two churches were then named East Union and West Union.' (page 5).

When a volunteer company was organized in Southway in Worcester County in the spring of 1775 and he joined the company around the first of April of that year. The company was commanded by Captain Josiah Faye. On the 19th of April, the day of the battles at Lexington and Concord, the company was ordered to proceed to Cambridge. The original of the Militia Roll for Capt. Faye's company for the "Alarm" of April 19th, 1775 is in the Massachusetts State Archives at Crown Point, south of Boston.
