Extractions: From CA 24 in Alameda County, exit CA 13. Drive south on CA 13 about 3 miles, then exit Joaquin Miller Road. At the base of the exit ramp, turn left, cross over the highway, then bear right onto Joaquin Miller Road. Drive uphill about 0.8 mile, then turn left onto Sanborn Drive (look for the Woodminster sign). Drive about 0.1 mile on Sanborn Drive, and park in the lot (or along the side of the road) near the ranger station. There is a medium-sized paved lot, but many people park along the side of Sanborn Drive. Mind the no parking signs. If there is no parking inside the park, you can easily and legally park on the side of Joaquin Miller Road and walk in. No entrance or parking fees. Restrooms, pay phone, maps, and drinking water at the ranger station. There is one designated handicapped parking spot in the parking lot (which also services the Joaquin Miller Community Center), but trails here are poorly suited to wheelchairs. AC Transit bus #53 stops in front of the park.

The Park is home to one of the only urban second-growth redwood groves in existence, as well as miles of trails, picnic grounds, and a WPA-era art deco construction that includes pools, cascades, and the Woodminster Amphitheater. Designed by a team headed by Oakland Park Superintendent William Mott Jr and built as a WPA project, Woodminster Amphitheater and Cascades were dedicated in 1940 as a memorial to California writers. The trees and other vegetation along the Cascades, planted by horticulturist and design team member Lionel Sprattling, are designated Writers Memorial Grove, and individual plantings are dedicated to California’s great authors, including Joaquin Miller as well as Bret Harte, Jack London, Mark Twain, Dashiell Hammet, Ina Coolbrith, and many others. This is a fitting tribute, since so many of them visited this spot when "Poet of the Sierras" Joaquin Miller owned this land which he called "The Hights," spelling intentional.

Extractions: The Self-Invented Man It is difficult to sort out the fact from the fiction in the life of Joaquin Miller, born Cincinnatus Hiner Miller in Indiana in 1837, not in a covered wagon in 1842 as he always claimed. Ambrose Bierce called him "the greatest liar this country has ever produced," and in fact his autobiography is classified as fiction in libraries. It was Oakland’s famous librarian and California’s first poet laureate Ina Coolbrith who told him if he wanted to be a successful poet he had to have a more romantic presentation. She encouraged him to change his name to Joaquin, grow his hair long, dress in buckskins, and adopt the persona of the Wild West. In this character, he traveled to Europe and was a sensation at London parties with his sombrero, polka dot bandana, and high-heeled boots, handing out calling cards that read "Joaquin Miller, Byron of the Rockies." Extractions: Joaquin Miller, 1837-1913 Joaquin Miller was born Cincinnatus Hiner Miller on September 8, 1837. His parents were Quakers and his father was a magistrate in Indiana. In 1852, the family moved to Oregon, traveling with two heavily laden wagons, eight oxen yoked to each, a carriage, and two horses. The three thousand mile trip took over seven months. They settled near Eugene, Oregon where they established a home and farm. Miller and a friend set off to California in search of gold in 1855 and subsequently worked in a number of mining camps. He reported that he was severely wounded in a battle between the settlers near Mt. Shasta and the Modoc Indians when an arrow pierced his face and exited the back of his neck. He later survived other battles with northern California Indian groups, and had several altercations with the law over matters relating to the ownership of livestock and gun play. Miller attended Columbia College in in Eugene City from 1857 to 1858. He taught school, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1861. From 1861 to 1862 Miller rode pony express from Walla Walla to Idaho mines but he soon returned to Eugene City to become a newspaper editor. In his newspaper

Just as it is implicit, if we see a small paper card, about two inches by three and a half, with a name on it, that this is the calling card or business card of some person, and that other data on that card gives us information about that person and their relationships. Just as a person may have different business cards for different roles, so two different vCards can be vCards of the same person. But the vCard specification gives us no way to relate those two vCards. One datum on a vCard is related to another by being within the same vCard. (Yes, or by being somehow linked to from a vCard, but forget that for this discussion.)
