With the selections from History , it is wise to avoid tipping off students in advance to Irving's attitude toward the treatment of Native Americans by European-Americans; see if they can penetrate through the technically sophisticated irony to Irving's scathing condemnation; some may be tempted to read the passage as approving the harsh treatment. (Note that, strictly speaking, the passage is concerned with Latin America, not America as a whole. But students can be asked whether it has relevance to North American policies relating to Indians.) Emphasize Irving's humor before getting too serious. Give students a chance to talk about what they find entertaining in the selections and why. Also, try comparing responses of male and female students to "Rip Van Winkle." How sympathetic are each to Rip? Look at the story as the first in a long line of texts by male American writers in which a male protagonist forsakes civilized community life for the wilderness (or the sea) on a quest of sorts and perhaps joins forces with a male companion(s). It was not until he was thirty-seven, however, that he established himself as a professional author. The cheap importation and reproduction of English books made literature a precarious occupation in the United States at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Moreover American commercial society tended to equate art with idleness. For years Irving halfheartedly pursued a career in law and business, while stealing as much time from work as possible for his writing. Only in 1818, with the bankruptcy of his brothers’ importing firm, on which he depended financially, did he risk authorship for a living. Two years later, however, the remarkable popularity of The Sketch Book made him a marketable commodity in both England and America, and his future as the nation’s first successful professional writer was guaranteed.

    Extractions: GRAVE LOCATION North Tarrytown, New York: Sleepy Hollow Cemetery American writer of Scottish descent. He grew up in New York, then a town with only 25,000 inhabitants. In 1809 he published a history of the city titled "A History of New-York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Dietrich Knickerbocker" in which he satirizes pretentious historians. Irving had also started to study law, but when his beloved Matilda Hoffman died in the same year of tuberculosis, his already delicate health was damaged further and his parents sent him abroad. In England (where he spent many years in Birmingham) he met many famous writers. This inspired him to continue his own writing. Sir Walter Scott helped him to publish his "Sketch Book", for which he received 2,000 pounds. The Sketch Book made him famous and he published more sketches in "By Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." (1822)" and "Tales of a Traveller" (1824). Unfortunately the latter work was revceived very badly, causing Irving to stop writing fiction. From then on he wrote mainly history and biography.

    Extractions: Washington Irving was born in New York City as the youngest of 11 children. His father was a wealthy merchant, and his mother, an English woman, was the granddaughter of a clergyman. According to a story, George Washington met Irving, named after him, and gave his blessing. In the years to come Irving would write one of his greatest works, THE LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON (1855-59). Early in his life Irving developed a passion for books. He read Robinson Crusoe, Sinbad the Sailor, and The World Displyed (stories about voyages and travels). He studied law privately in the offices of Henry Masterton (1798), Brockholst Livingston (1801), and John Ogde Hoffman (1802), but practiced only briefly. From 1804 to 1806 he travelled widely Europe. He visited Marseilles, Genoa, Sicily, where he saw the famous English naval officer, Nelson, and met Washington Allston, the painter, in Rome. After return to the United States, Irving was admitted to New York bar in 1806. He was a partner with his brothers in the family hardware business, New York and Liverpool, England, and representative of the business in England until it collapsed in 1818. During the war of 1812 Irving was a military aide to New York Governor Tompkins in the U.S. Army. Irving's career as a writer started in journals and newspapers. He contributed to Morning Chronicle (1802-03), which was edited by his brother Peter, and published Salmagundi (1807-08), writing in collaboration with his brother William and James Kirke Paulding. From 1812 to 1814 he was an editor of Analetic magazine in Philadelphia and New York.
