Billie's Bones Unfortunately, Janis Ian is better known for a couple of fluke hit singles than for her mostly impressive body of work. Dig deeper into her catalog and you'll be rewarded with a batch of wry, piercing songs with clever arrangements and a disarmingly straightforward vocal delivery. Ian was a child prodigy, shooting to sudden fame at 15 with her self-penned "Society's Child," about a white girl who succumbs to pressure and stops dating a black boy. Though it hasn't aged well, it was controversial enough in 1967 to get her cursed and spat on, and it sailed up the charts. She rapidly matured as a singer and songwriter, but nobody paid much attention until the surprise mid-70s hit "At Seventeen" and the accompanying album Between The Lines established her as one of the preeminent soft-rock post-folkies. After several intriguing followups experienced sales problems, Ian took several years off from the business, moved to Nashville, made a reputation as a songwriter for others, came out as a lesbian, and started recording again (not necessarily all in that order). Luckily for us, her songwriting skills are intact, and her recent work seems more confident and relaxed. Her official site is back; there's also a very extensive

The song has an ornery groove, telling just what she learned about what they learned, delivered in incredulous rhyme. For having the temerity to believe in civil rights, her folks were snooped on for enough years to prevent her father from ever winning tenure as a teacher. www.janisian.com . In addition to writing articulate and moving lyrics, Ian has written a vast number of magazine pieces, which are posted on the site. Extractions: Janis Ian she of "At Seventeen," "Stars," "Tattoo," "Fly Too High," "Jesse" and "Society's Child," to name but a few of her hits is, strangely, one of those artists whose name eludes the general recall of many. Yet, as soon as one of her songs begins, recognition kicks in and recaptures her audience. I confess that I still have three of her albums on vinyl, so it was with pleasurable anticipation I listened to Working Without a Net , which is her first release of live material. I was not disappointed apart from the inexplicable exclusion of my favourite, "Restless Eyes," from the tracks, this double CD is solid joy and a reaffirmment of Ian's skill as well as her maturing vocals and performance abilities. The recordings are taken from a selection of live performances since 1990, taped "live to two track" in other words, just what the audience heard that night, and not re-recorded, mixed, dubbed or subject to any other technical jiggery-pokery. Interspersing the songs are stage commentaries from Ian explanations about the impetus for her songs, joking asides to her audience and so on which add to the live flavour of this album without detracting from the songs or distracting the listener. I found the subtle differences in her performances intriguing, having been so accustomed to the studio productions from the 1970s and '80s. They are undoubtedly the same songs, but Ian is older and wiser, and the differences in interpretation bring a new depth and poignancy to the lyrics. "Jesse" is particularly affected by this always an emotive song, it now soars to higher heights of hope, swoops to deeper depths of despair and tugs even more insistently at one's heartstrings.

SL: The booklets with nearly all your albums contain a message about your guitar being lost in 1972 and you are trying to find it. SL: Was this an important guitar for you? Was it, say, the first guitar you bought with your royalties? JANIS IAN: It was a guitar that my dad had bought a year before I was born. He was a farmer and he had bought it from a woman whose husband had died. She had found the guitar in the attic and my dad bought it for $25. It was the guitar I learned on, its the guitar I wrote Societys Child on, its the first guitar I ever played at shows and its obviously an important guitar for me, and, as it turned out, it was worth considerably more than $25, although my dad didnt know until I came home one day and told him. SL: Your first album, Janis Ian, in 1967 was quite an angry album. JANIS IAN: Not so much angry as frustrated. It is the characteristic of a 14 or 15 year old to be frustrated by everything. To me Societys Child is more frustration and sadness although that might lead to anger: its a sadness that you cant wave a magic wand at and have the world the way that you would like it.
