Mora Dickson A wide range of people were born in Moffat, lived there or nearby, visited the town or were buried there. Here is a small selection of the most famous. William Wallace had a sister married to the lord of Corehead Tower (now Corehead Farm) at the head of Moffat Dale near the Beeftub. He is supposed to have ridden from there in 1297 to fame and eventual execution. The Bruce family held lands in and around Lochmaben and Moffat, including Auldton Motte. The Robert le Bruce who lived there in 1177 was possibly an ancestor of the victor of Bannockburn, King Robert 'The Bruce' in 1314. Archibald Johnstone born near Moffat, was the Scottish lawyer who drafted the Articles of the Covenant, by which Presbyterians separated themselves from the Episcopalian belief in a Church lead by Bishops and the King. This was seen as being treasonous, so was suppressed as a rebellion, although (initially at least) no disloyalty was intended. Johnstone was executed for his daring to draft the document. Extractions: Hogg was born in 1770 at Ettrickhall farm in the Ettrick valley: the cottage where he was born does not survive, but a Victorian monument marks the spot. His father, a sheep-farmer, became bankrupt in 1777, and as a result the young Hogg's formal schooling came to a premature end, the rest of his childhood being spent working as a cowherd and later as a shepherd. During his twenties, Hogg was employed as a shepherd by a relative of his mother's, Mr Laidlaw of Blackhouse farm, in Yarrow. At Blackhouse Hogg had access to a good collection of books; and he began to read widely, and also to write. Thereafter Hogg earned his living partly through various farming projects, and partly as a professional writer. In these roles he divided much of his time between Edinburgh and his native Ettrick Forest. Hogg published mainly poetry until he was in his late forties. In 1810 Hogg moved to Edinburgh and subsequently made his reputation as a poet with his collection The Queen's Wake published in 1813. He was well regarded by fellow Romantic Poets such as Byron Wordsworth and Southey . Wordsworth wrote a memorial to Hogg entitled Extempore Effusion upon the Death of James Hogg. Ettrick Church In 1815 the Duke of Buccleuch died and bequeathed Hogg a farm at Altrive Lake in Yarrow. He lived here until the end of his life, farming and writing. He was known locally as 'The Ettrick Shepherd'. Hogg frequently visited the Tibbie Shiel's Inn on the Scottish Borders meeting with fellow writers including Scott and De Quincey. Extractions: Hoggâs novels were extensively bowdlerized throughout the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century, damaging his reputation and his position both in literature and in the collectible market. Original versions of his novels, while extremely scarce, have never commanded prices commensurate with his influence on literature or with lesser works by his contemporaries. A republication of the original unexpurgated novels by the University of South Carolina and the University of Edinburgh, has begun to revive interest in Hogg as a collectible and influential author. The regard in which Hogg was held by his contemporaries is made clear in this letter from Byron, unearthed in 1887 and first published in The Archivist Volume 3 Number 1, October, 1888. Itâs absence from Mooreâs collections of Byronâs Journals and Correspondence, no doubt, abets Hoggâs obscurity.
