Before he was thirty he had written a play called Montana Sea of Grass . By 1947 he had been in three movies that year: Rolling Home with Russell Hayden and Jean Parker; a big feature for Raoul Walsh with Robert Mitchum called Pursued ; and after that Red River starring John Wayne and directed by Howard Hawks. By September 21, 1947, at the age of sixty-nine, Harry Carey, Sr. was dying of emphysema. Dobe Carey's first movie for John Ford was 3 Godfathers that began filming on May 16, 1948. It was while filming 3 Godfathers that Dobe met Ben Johnson and a lifelong friendship developed. John Ford always wore a jacket, no matter the weather, a scarf around his neck, a dirty slouch hat, and always dark glasses. At the end of 3 Godfathers is a dedication to Harry Carey, Sr. and this helped Dobe understand Ford. The next eight movies he did with John Ford after

Extractions: Nick Brignola - "Poinciana" RealAudio Sample Multi-reed instrumentalist Nick Brignola sticks to his baritone sax on this 1997 CD, and, in the company of pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Steve LaSpina, and drummer Billy Hart (with percussionist Café added on three tracks), he proves not only his "remarkable muscularity and exuberance (liner) with peppery incursions into Monk's "Well, You Needn't" and free flight explorations of Rollin's "Airegin", but also an imaginative, fluid articulation with such standards as "What'll I do?" or "When You Wish Upon a Star". A strong rhythmic support throughout, but especially with Tom Harrell's latinized "April Mist" or Strayhorn's "Upper Manhattan Medical Group", adds another dimension upon which the baritonist can pursue his improvisatory capabilities. This is salty stuff indeed, on a par with the best of Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber, or Cecil Payne. (J.S.) Reservoir RSR CD 151 to order
