Extractions: Quotes of the Day for 29 November 2004 - C. S. Lewis Clive Hamilton Staples Lewis was born at Belfast, Ireland on this day in 1898. After his mother's death he abandoned his faith, went to Oxford, went to war, returned to Oxford as a tutor, and became a major Christian author after returning to Christianity in 1929. Millions of kids, including yours truly, grew up with his magical "Chronicles of Narnia" books. His books were signed C. S. Lewis, but he was Jack to family and friends. Any fixing of the mind on old evils beyond what is absolutely necessary for repenting of our own sins and forgiving those of others is ... usually bad for us. There seems no plan because it's all plan. There seems no center because it's all center. Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important. Gratitude looks to the past and love to the present; fear, avarice, lust and ambition look ahead. It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present in us.

However, Lewis still shunned his childhood Christian faith. In 1929, he became a theist, saying "In. . .1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed..." But Lewis would not become a Christian until a few years later. In 1931, Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Hugo Dyson had a long, deep conversation about Christianity. The next day Lewis accepted Christ. In Mere Christianity he said, "When we set out [by motorcycle to the Whipsnade Zoo] I did not believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and when we reached the zoo I did."

Where to stay Previous List of Headington people Next The odd thing was that before God closed in on me, I was in fact offered what now appears to be a moment of wholly free choice. I was going up Headington Hill on the top of a bus. Without words, and almost without images, a fact about myself was somehow presented to me. I became aware that I was holding something at bay. I felt myself being given a free choice. I could open the door or keep it shut. I chose to open. The first Headington house that Lewis (who was always known as Jack) moved to was "Uplands" at 54 Windmill Road in 1921. It was occupied by Mrs Janie King Moore (née Askins) and her daughter Maureen. Mrs Moore (known as Minto) was separated from her husband, and was the mother of a friend of Lewis's who had died in the First World War. She was born in 1872, and was thus 26 years older than Lewis; he regarded her as his adopted mother, but some scholars have suggested that there was more to the relationship than this. In August 1930 Lewis moved with Mrs Moore and her daughter to "Hillsboro" in Holyoake Road (
