Extractions: The Imagination and Apologetics of C. S. Lewis You will be both grieved and amused to learn that out of about 60 reviews [of Out of the Silent Planet], only 2 showed any knowledge that my idea of a fall of the Bent One was anything but a private invention of my own. But if only there were someone with a richer talent and more leisure, I believe this great ignorance might be a help to the evangelisation of England: any amount of theology can now be smuggled into people's minds under cover of romance without their knowing it (letter to Sister Penelope, 9 August 1939) Spring 2005, 6-8:50 p.m. Tuesdays; Don King, dking@montreat.edu Office hours, 9-11 a.m. MWF; McGowan 107; 828-669-8012, ex. 3819 Table of Contents Course Description Final Comments Course Description This course offers a comprehensive view of the life and works of C. S. Lewis with a focus upon how his imagination helped to shape his apologetics. In addition to reading selections from his letters, journals, poems, fiction, non-fiction, and apologetics, students will view and discuss important new video productions in order to gain a perspective on the ideas, thoughts, and opinions of the most popular Christian author of the twentieth century. Because Lewis has powerfully influenced so many people, this course will explore his approach to making Christianity intellectually reasonable, theologically winsome, and spiritually compelling.

Extractions: LAMB For over three thousand years Jewish people have celebrated the Passover. "They are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household" ( Exodus 12:3 ). When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming for baptism he said "Here is the Lamb ( amnos ) of God who keeps taking away the sin of the world" ( John 1:29 , the verb is a present continuous). The prophets already knew the Messiah Son of God as King and Servant, Lion and Child, Judge and Forgiver, Rock and Seedling, and both Shepherd and Lamb. This means that his willingness to absorb our sin, and forgive us on the cross, is a visible expression in space-time of his eternal Lambness. His disciples are in turn sent out as sacrificial lambs ( arnas from aryn , a lamb for sacrifice). In the Book of Revelation there are 26 references to the triumphant Little Lamb ( arnion ) who receives our prayers ( Revelation 5:8 ), reigns over "every creature in heaven and earth" ( Revelation 5:13, 7:9-10, 14:1, 10, 17:14, 22:1-3 ), exercises wrath ( Revelation 6:16 ), shepherds and is married to his people (

This lecture is about two heroes of the intellectual conservative movement: C. S. Lewis and T. S. Eliot. Many of you will be familiar with their works and thought, and rightly assume that they both were influential spokesmen of the same tradition. Russell Kirk in his essay on the history of conservative thought which is at the centre of this conference, discusses Lewis as well as Eliot, and states that the two of them hold common ground against the advocates of what C. S. Lewis called 'the abolition of man' ( The Conservative Mind , p. 495).
