Extractions: As if you did not have enough to do in the garden at this time of the year, we thought that we might spark your interest in a hobby that has been in existence for thousands of years and has recently made quite a comeback. Saving seeds from plants that you have grown can be quite rewarding, very educational, and most of all, fun! There are a multitude of reasons why home gardeners are interested in saving seeds. One of the most common reasons is that many gardeners, worldwide, are striving to be self-sufficient. A huge undertaking in the process of self-sufficiency is to grow your own food. By collecting seed to replant the following season, you are taking it one step further.

Extractions: Rainy Side Gardeners' Book Shelf Edibles not only feed our bodies but they can be beautiful in the landscape. Here is a selection of books to help you grow wonderful, healthy vegetables and fruit. Book Description: Bowling uses her twenty years of personal experience and professional expertise to illuminate the art and science of growing strawberries, brambles (including raspberries and blackberries), blueberries, grapes, and a host of minor small fruits such as kiwi, currants, and gooseberries. A chapter is devoted to each of the main berry types and includes cultural requirements, botanical traits, the history of the plant in cultivation and in commerce, appropriate cultivars for each region of the United States, and pest and disease considerations. Because berry fruits are all too often ignored for their aesthetic and practical benefits, Bowling includes a chapter on their contributions to the garden landscape. Blueberries, Cranberries and Other Vacciniums
Extractions: Resources Steve Solomon developed this fertilizer mixture specifically for growing in our maritime climate. It is best to buy in bulk as it is far cheaper in the long haul than buying the small boxes of fertilizer. Store in metal galvanized garbage cans and keep moisture out. Four parts seed meal (cottonseed or canola meal is usually readily available here in the Northwest.) ½ part kelp meal. You won't need to be precise when measuring this out. The seed meal and lime are most important ingrediants and as you build your supply of fertilizer you can add the latter ingrediants as you can afford them. You can mix them all at once or store them seperately and mix what you need as you use them. In the Plant and Gallery Guide most of the plants listed there I recommend using a complete organic fertilizer. This is the formula I recommend. For more information see West Side Gardener where Travis goes into much more detail about this fertilizer for the Pacific Northwest.
