Extractions: Genealogical Society Wichita, Kansas 1887 Wichita City Directory Third Annual Directory of the City of Wichita for 1887 It is with pleasure we present to the citizens of Wichita our third annual directory, by far the largest and most complete yet issued. The growth of the city during the past year has been unprecedented, fully sixty per cent increase; and our statement one year ago the "this is the beginning of one of the most significant examples of building up a city this country has ever seen," is becoming literally verified. The population has reached 32,00, and Wichita's glorious future is now more clearly discernible than ever before. So frequent are the changes in resident and business location and so rapid the increase in resident population that new directory is a great necessity. That this - which is the result of many weeks of incessant labor - will meet the wants of the public is confidently hoped by the publisher. During the last year the city has extended her borders in every direction; realty has enhansed at least 150 per cent; the city has expended in buildings exclusive of churches and collages the sum of $5,000,000; two new railroads have been built to the city; four new universities established; four motor lines, one of which is now in operation; one $1215,000 hotel completed; two thousand and sixty-three new residences; forty new brick business store rooms; twenty miles of street railway; three new bridges across the Great Arkansas; foundations of the Rock Island passenger depot laid; two new banks established; a new city park laid out; four new churches dedicated; a new opera house nearly completed; a new government building commenced; a steam stone mill put in operation; electric fire alarm established; press brick manufactory and many other extensive enterprises.

Extractions: The Iowa Authors Collection "In 1945 the University of Iowa Library entrusted to one of its long-time librarians, Grace Wormer, the task of forming a special collection of books written by Iowa authors," wrote Frank Paluka in Iowa Authors: A Bio-bibliography of Sixty Native Writers (Iowa City: Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries, 1967). "An Iowa author, for the purpose of this collection, was considered to be any writer born in the state or definitely associated with Iowa who had written at least one published book. For non-native writers, a definite association with the state was usually interpreted to mean a residence in Iowa of twenty years or more." By 1967, the collection included the work of more than 800 writers. A 1993 article in by Robert McCown in Books at Iowa gives more details on the history of the collection.
