Peterson PRINCIPAL Indian tribes in this region before the advent of the white men were the Sioux, the Pawnee, and the Cheyenne. A band of the Sioux known as the Brule Indians lived for some time on Beaver creek, and here was established the Spotted Tail agency named for their chief. Legend has it that the tribe was named by French Canadian trappers who visited the Indian camp. During one night of the traders' visit one of the Indians rolled too close to the fire and burned his side. From this episode the French named the tribe Brule, or Broo-lay, meaning "burned side. The first white settlement in what is now Sheridan County was made on White Clay creek approximately twenty miles northwest of the present site of Rushville. Most of the first settlers took "squatter's right" upon the land, filing later at Valentine after the United States land office was established.

Extractions: INTRODUCTION Chicago's growth has long been linked to the strength and diversity of her industries. Many excellent histories of Chicago reflect the importance of business in the city's life; for example, A.T. Andreas' History of Chicago (1884-1886) or Donald L. Miller's City of the Century (1996). These books and other general histories can be found listed on the Chicago Bibliography The general histories of Chicago are supplemented by works which focus on the histories of specific companies, such as the books on this list. These company histories are available at the Harold Washington Library Cente r or the Sulzer Regional Library . The books are useful for tracing the history of individual Chicago area companies as well as for the growth of industry in the Chicago area. They are also useful for History Fair projects. Historical information about local companies may also be found in business directories, such as Hoover's Handbook of American Business or manuals from Moody's. Information on individual companies is also available in many places on the internet, such as the Library's

Extractions: Notes from the Editor Since the start of Loose Branches and Roots I have located and published records from 22 Finnell Family Bibles, including the two in this issue. There are also 23 additional Finnell Bible Records published the the booklet Finnell Family Cemeteries and Bible Records Volume I . Surprising that there are a total of 45 Finnell Family Bibles a lot more then I thought could be find when I first started this project. Many or most of these records are very important in that the original records are still in private hands and in the possession of people no longer even named Finnell . Having published these records we have made then available to a wider public even beyond the subscribers of this publication. Copies of the Loose Branches and Roots some Finnell Family Records has been deposited in several National scope Genealogical and Historical libraries, so that the information can be used by many people who have Finnell Family interests now and in the future. This issue also contains information and new documentation on several different Finnell Families

EDWARD SYLVESTER ELLIS Ellis had faith in Irwin, and in No. I of the American Novels appeared the Gordon, and Jayne is also mentioned in a suit by Ellis against Hurst Co., http://www.niulib.niu.edu/badndp/ellis_edward.html
Extractions: GOETHE: Faust, garden scene In the summer of 1860, there was sent to the offices of Irwin P. Beadle & Co., 141 William Street, New York, the manuscript of a novel entitled, "Seth Jones; or, The Captives of the Frontier," and offered for publication in Beadle's series of Dime Novels. It was accepted and for it the author received seventy-five dollars. The story was extensively advertised. It boosted the sales of the Dime Novels † "Seth Jones" was actually not the first Ellis' publications, for he had had poems in Gleason's Pictorial as early as 1857. He also had a novel, "Dick Flinton; or Life on the Border," in the New York Dispatch as a serial, beginning March 5,1859. This novel, with the names of some of the characters changed, reappeared later as "Kent, the Ranger," September I, 1863, as Dime Novels , no. 59. However, it was the success of "Seth Jones" that induced Ellis to continue writing. He had a contract with Beadle & Co. for four novels a year, but nevertheless considered a job in hand worth two in the air, consequently continued teaching until the middle 1880's, after which he devoted all of his time to literature.
