    Extractions: THE HAMLIN GARLAND COLLECTION Overview In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt wrote his friend Hamlin Garland that he could not invite President Diaz of Me xico or any other foreign rulers to the White House, for "We have been bedeviled to invite all kinds of kings" and "we have politely but firmly declined in each case. As a matter of fact, a democratic government like ours is not suited to extend hospitality to kings and the like." George Bernard Shaw, on a world cruise in 1933, wrote from the "Empress of Britain" that he had stayed with William Randolph Hearst at San Simeon "with a host of young sirens from the studios...The Labour people were amazed and disgusted by such levity, but I was quite satisfied with this disposal of my time." He concludes by presenting his compliments to the Garland family, then residing in Hollywood, trusting that "their characters have not suffered by their present location." Also in the collection are nearly eight hundred manuscripts of Garland's writings, dozens of his literary notebooks, many hundreds of photographs and other memorabilia, and Garland's personal library. Many of the items in the collection are surprising. For example, there are sheets of then-fashionable spirit-writing and the transcripts of seances in which Garland participated. Then there is a hand-written translation of Salvatore Farina's play "Il Signor Io" made by Garland's best friend, Henry Blake Fuller. There is also a 100-page fragmentary dramatization by William Dean Howells of his novel A Hazard of New Fortunes, which was later published from this text in Howells's Complete Plays at New York University Press.

    Extractions: 19th-century Regional Writing in the United States Garland is perhaps best remembered for his short stories and his autobiographical "Middle Border" series of narratives. But he got his start as a local colorist. I hope to bring you much of Main-Travelled Roads as time goes on, because it is harder and harder to find in print anywhere. Garland's regional writings are important to the genre for their political twist (he was very much an advodate for reforms in farm policies) as well as for their powerful portrayals of tension between urbane city folks and the worn-down farmers struggling to scratch out a living on the plains. Perhaps for autobiographical reasons, he was especially sensitive to the plight of the womenfolk. As his farming family moved progressively westward from Wisconsin to Iowa and then to the Dakotas, Garland rebelled against the vicissitudes of pioneering and went to Boston for a career in 1884. Self-educated there, he gradually won a place for himself in the literary set of Boston and Cambridge and was influenced by the novelist William Dean Howells. Garland recorded the physical oppression and economic frustrations of pioneer life on the Great Plains in the short stories that were collected in Main-Travelled Roads (1891), one of his best works. During its Seminary days the building was called Vogel Hall for Louise Pfister Vogel (see Vogel Hall entry), and housed the Seminary dormitory, dining room, and study hall. The English Department occupied Garland Hall in 1961 after Garland and adjoining Pearse and Vogel Halls were remodeled. Some departments of the School of Education also had offices in Garland until their move to Enderis Hall in 1972. Garland Hall now houses the Psychology Department, Center for International Studies, Center for Latin America, and the Honors Program of the College of Letters and Science.

Paper folder. Covers soiled, minor loss of paper to last two pages effecting a few letters of ad text, else good. A series of small (8 x 3.5 inches) strip maps showing major routes across the southernmost part of the southwest from southern California across Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas to Louisiana. Each map is accompanied by a page of advertising for travelers' facilities in the area. The maps aren't very good, showing little in the way of road conditions, and the one bit of text is misleading: e.g. "Raton Pass is always open, (oh, no it isn't) has good grades, (if by that you mean some of the steepest in the Rockies) and can be made in high gear (ha!). " Looks to me like it is mainly a vehicle for advertising. It was published in Seattle and has no apparent connection to the Fred Harvey company. $85 ORDER
