Atwood first gained recognition for her collection of poems The Circle Game (1966). After several arctic expeditions, he was the first to explore the region by air (1928), traveling from ALASKA to Spitsbergen. He was knighted that same year. In 1931 he headed an arctic submarine expedition. more info ROY WILKINS , 190181, African-American social reformer and civil-rights leader; b. St. Louis, Mo. As leader (193177) of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Wilkins tirelessly advanced the cause of racial equality achieved through constitutional means, opposing both white supremacy and African-American separatism. He is credited by many as the principal architect of school desegregation and the 1964 Civil Rights Act. MAURICE HUGH FREDERICK WILKINS , 1916, Irish biophysicist; b. New Zealand. He successfully extracted fibers from a gel of DNA, which, when analyzed by X-ray diffraction, showed a helical molecular structure.
