Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) French novelist of the realist school, best-known for MADAME BOVARY (1857), a story of adultery and unhappy love affair of the provincial wife Emma Bovary. As a writer Flaubert was a perfectionist, who did not make a distinction between a beautiful or ugly subject: all was in the style. The idea, he argued, only exists by virtue of its form - its elements included the perfect word, cunningly contrived and verified rhythms, and a genuine architectural structure. "Has it ever happened to you," Leon went on, "to come across some vague idea of one's own in a book, some dim image that comes back to you from afar, and as the completest expression of your own slightest sentiment?" "That is why," he said, "I especially love the poets. I think verse more tender than prose, and that it moves far more easily to tears." (from Madame Bovary Flaubert started to write during his school years. A disappointment in his teens - Flaubert fell in love with Elisa Schlésinger, who was married and some 10 years his senior - inspired much of his early writing. In the 1840s Flaubert studied law at Paris, a brief episode in his life, and in 1844 he had a nervous attack. "I was cowardly in my youth," Flaubert wrote once to George Sand. "I was afraid of life." He recognized from suffering a nervous disease, although it could have been epilepsy. However, the diagnosis changed Flaubert's life. He failed his law exams and decided to devote himself to literature. In this he was helped by his father who bought him a house at Croisset, on the River Seine between Paris and Rouen.

Flaubert was born in Rouen, Normandy. As the son of a successful surgeon, he was introduced early on to life’s realities of illness and death. Studying briefly under his father, Flaubert’s childhood and early adulthood were marked by the atmosphere of the hospital, of mourning, and of suffering. In 1840, he left for Paris, where he briefly studied law, but he ended his legal studies in favor of a writing career after he failed his second year law exams. Madame Bovary (1857) is weighted with images of a vain and hollow society of dim-witted characters, an image which is in harmony with his distaste for the bourgeois society. First appearing in Revue de Paris, Madame Bovary Salambo (1863) and The Sentimental Education (1869). Flaubert's long novel, Boulevard Et Pécuchet , was left unfinished at his death. Flaubert died of a cerebral hemorrhage on May 8, 1880.

I doubt everything, even my doubt" (Flaubert in a letter, August 1846) Gustave Flaubert was born the son of a surgeon in Rouen in 1821. The influence of a medical background is evident both in the content of Madame Bovary and in his 'scientific' style. In 1844 he suffered a form of epileptic seizure which forced him to give up his hated legal studies in Paris (although they later provided material both for Charles Bovary's student days and for Léon) and allowed him to devote himself to his writing. In 1846 he retired to the quiet Normandy village of Croisset with his mother and young niece. Despite his relative isolation he travelled widely; he witnessed the 1848 uprising in Paris (which he later drew on for A Sentimental Education ), toured the Near East with his friend and fellow writer Maxime du Camp and visited North Africa to collect material for the novel Salammbô . Surprisingly for a man famed for his literary misanthropy he also enjoyed the company of a wide variety of friends; he was closest to the writer Louis Bouilhet (Flaubert was devastated by his death in 1869) but he also corresponded with the Goncourt brothers, Sainte-Beuve, George Sand and even Princesse Mathilde, Napoleon III's cousin. He met his mistress and 'muse' Louise Colet in 1846; their relationship lasted until 1857 and their extensive and intimate correspondence has shed much light on the compostion of
