Extractions: General Information Christian Science is a religion emphasizing divine healing as practiced by Jesus Christ; its tenets were formulated by Mary Baker Eddy. In 1879, Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, with its headquarters in Boston. Today it has about 3,000 branch churches, societies, and college organizations in more than 50 countries. While the branches are democratic in government, they all conform to the rules laid down in the Manual of The Mother Church (1895) by Eddy. Sunday services consist mainly of readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1906), the textbook of Christian Science written by Mary Baker Eddy. Wednesday meetings include testimonies of healing from the congregation. The church has no ordained clergy. Readers, both men and women, are elected from the membership to conduct the services. Practitioners, also both men and women, devote full time to the work of spiritual healing. Christian Science teaches that God and his spiritual creation are the only realities. God is regarded as infinite Life, Truth, Spirit, Mind, and Principle. The material world, with all its suffering, strife, and death, is considered to be a misconception or distorted view of the divine universe. Christian Science claims to prove through the healing of disease and other difficulties that the understanding of God and his spiritual creation is as effective now as it was in Jesus' time. Its adherents therefore rely on divine law in times of sickness instead of resorting to medical and other material means. The right of Christian Science parents to withhold medical treatment from their children has been challenged in court.

Her health initially improved under his care, but she later suffered a relapse. Shortly afterwards, she fell on an icy sidewalk and severely injured herself. Some did not expect her to survive. On what she believed to be her deathbed, she read one of Jesus' healings. She suddenly realized that healing comes not from internal bodily processes, or from the power of a person's mind, but from the Divine Mind, God. She was instantly cured! Mrs. Eddy withdrew from society for three years in order to concentrate on a deep search through the Bible and discover precisely how her healing had taken place. Born Mary Morse Baker in Bow, N.H., in 1821, she was a child of the starchy, repressed world of Victorian New England. She poured her innermost feelings into florid verse, suffered from nervous seizures, and was sick most of the time. Her childhood was shaped by a strict, authoritarian father and by a mother who believed her daughter had been divinely touched while still in the womb, and they treated her accordingly. When the regimen of regular schooling proved too much for Mary's frail constitution, her education was continued at home. Pampering, however, did not prepare her for a series of personal tragedies. While still a young woman she buried her mother, a doting older brother, a fiance, and her husband of one year. Her infant son was handed over to friends to raise. Her next marriage was to a philandering itinerant dentist-a union which caused Mary further mental and physical anguish due to her husband' general absence. Between bouts of invalidism brought on by a mysterious spinal condition, she taught school, had several poems and essays published locally, and shared New England's fascination with spiritualism, mesmerism, health fads, and miracle cures.

She was widowed (and pregnant) six months into her first marriage. Some six years later, her family, thinking her rambunctious son was too taxing for her, removed him from her and sent him to live with foster parents. Hoping to regain a stable home life for herself and her son, she married again, but eventually divorced her unfaithful second husband. In poor health during much of this time, she experimented with allopathic medicine and alternative therapies particularly with homeopathy. She was seeking an understanding of the relationship between mind, body, and spirit. Simultaneously, she continued a life- long study of the Bible searching to uncover its promise of spiritual healing.
