The Sharp Family - E. Tappan Adney (revised) Thomas Stephens, Compiler of the Life and Times of Archbishop Sharp, says of his Clifford Andrew Craig, born 21 February 1909 at Durham, Maine, http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/halew/Adney.htm
Extractions: Scottish Family and Name of Sharp There are in America three families bearing the name Sharp one of Scottish and one of English origin, while there is a third to which we may give no consideration here, it being of direct German descent, originally "Sharpenstein" now shortened to "Sharp. The English and Scottish families are probably very distantly related, and it is interesting to note that the perhaps most distinguished member of the Scottish family, James Sharp, was Archbishop of St. Andrews, hence Primate of Scotland, while at nearly the same time, a member of the English family, John Sharp, was Archbishop of York and Primate of England. As to the origin of the name, authorities appear to differ. Such dictionaries of British family names as Ferguson's "The Teutonic Name System" regard the name as being one of a class descriptive of personal characteristics. "Sharp," says Ferguson, "is from the Anglo-Saxon, Scearp; Old High German, Scarf; Modern German, Scharf, sharp, quick, acute; simple forms: English, Sharp, Sharpey, Sharpus, Scarfe, Scharb; German, Scharpff, Scharf; diminutive, Sharpley."

Extractions: Home Manuscript Research Project ... Contact Present: John Moore Katharine Keats-Rohan Alan Piper Julia Barrow John Insley Margaret Harvey Ian Doyle Robert Swanson Janet Burton Lynda Rollason David Rollason Willard McCarty Andrew Wareham Noting that Cecily Clark and Dorothy Whitelock had provided different dating schemes for the book, Andrew noted that the Liber Vitae of Thorney had been initially compiled in the period 1100-1115, although material in it referred back to the 1020s, and additions to it extended into the 1190s. An important question was therefore whether this earlier material had been adjusted to fit in with early twelfth-century interests. Working from a printed version of the names in the Liber Vitae prepared for the seminar from an M.Phil. thesis by Christine Wallis (University of Birmingham), he drew attention to what were apparently groups in the names, including one, generally thought to be the names of the household of King Cnut, which included the names of Osgod and Tovi, father or grandfather of Asgar the Staller, the antecessor of Geoffrey de Mandeville. Tovi is known to have married Osgod's daughter. They were not necessarily at the top of the early eleventh=-century aristocracy in reality, but in the list their names come after those of the earls. The question was, had they been pushed up the list by the compiler because of some early twelfth-century agenda?
