Extractions: Edwin Chadwick (1800-1890) - Was the most famous reformer in public health. Believed that greatest good for the greatest number. He also believed that disease and death caused poverty. Cleaning up the urban environment could prevent disease. He was the basis of Britains first public health law. Auguste Comte (1798-1857)- He wrote System of Positive Philosophy , a literature work with six volumes. He postulated that all intellectual activity progresses through predictable stages. He pointed out that the prevailing explanation of cosmic patterns had shifted from the will of God as knowledge of astronomy developed. Auguste eventually became the chief Priest of the religion of science and rule by experts. Charles Darwin (1809 1882)- He doubted the general beliefs in a special divine creation of species of animals. His ideas were published in On the Public Origin of Species By the Means of Natural Selection . In this book Darwin argued that chance differences among the members of a given species helped some survive while others died. His findings reinforced the teachings of Comte and Marx. He was hailed as the Newton of biology.
