Boris and Gleb were the sons of the first Christian prince of Russia, Saint Vladimir of Kiev , and Anne of Constantinople, the daughter of Emperor Basil II, the Bulgar slayer. The boys were baptized Romanus and David. After Vladimir's death, the kingdom was to have been divided among his sons, but their eldest half-brother, Svyatopolk, wished to rule alone. Boris was forewarned of his brother's plans, but when an army gathered to defend him, he called them off, explaining that he could not raise a hand against his brother who now stood in his father's place. With one attendant, Boris spent the night in prayer on the bank of the Alta River, and expressed how sad it was to leave the "marvelous light" of day and his "good and beautiful body." In the morning a gang of Svyatopolk's followers attacked him with spears while Boris prayed for them. On their way to Kiev with his body, the ruffians discovered he was still alive, and completed the job with swords.

St. Ita and grace of her desire, Bishop Declan of Ardmore confers the veil upon her . Second only to Saint Brigid among the most beloved of the Irish women http://www.allsaintsbrookline.org/celtic/saints/ita.html
Extractions: BACK TO CELTIC SPIRITUALITY St. Ita (Ite, Ide, Meda, Mita, Ytha) From girlhood, Ita believed she had a calling from God and wanted to become a nun. But Ita's father doesn't share her faith, and he is reluctant to allow her to dedicate her whole life to it. In common with men of his time and social standing, he has arranged a marriage for his daughter with a young nobleman. Ita is determined to resist this. She turns to God for deliverance from such an unwanted fate, spending three days fasting and praying. On the third night, God gave a message to her father in his sleep, saying that Ita will serve God in another part of the country, and that many people will find salvation through her. The next morning, Cennfoelad agreed that Ita could do as she wished. With her family now convinced of the wisdom and grace of her desire, Bishop Declan of Ardmore confers the veil upon her. At the age of sixteen, Ita then moves west, accompanied by her sister Fiona, with three heavenly lights to guide them. The first was at the top of the Galtee mountains, the second on the Mullaghareirk mountains, and the third at Cluain Creadhail. Ita settles near Sliabh Luachra, that almost mythical cultural heartland which includes parts of Cork, Kerry and West Limerick. She and her sister were welcomed by the local chieftain of the Ui Conaill Gabhra tribe. He wanted to give them a large tract to establish her convent. Once again Ita contradicts the wishes of a powerful man, insisting that she will only accept four acres of land, enough for gardens to provision the community. The settlement later became known as Cill Ide (Killeedy) and prospered as a center of learning and spiritual formation.

Early Celtic Soul Friendship Edward Sellner After the death of Bishop MacCuirv, Findbarr was much concerned at being withouta soul A story about Saint Declan of Ardmore, a fourthcentury Irish http://www.aislingmagazine.com/aislingmagazine/articles/TAM19/Friendship.html
Extractions: Contents Early Celtic Soul Friendship Part Three By looking at the Lives of the early Celtic saints Ed Sellner gives a detailed description of what soul-friendship entailed. Among other things it involved great affection, intimacy, mutuality and challenge. By Edward Sellner M ain sources for an understanding of the anamchara are the Lives of the early Celtic saints. For more than six centuries, from the 600s to well beyond 1200 C.E., monastic hagiographers in the Celtic churches of Ireland, Northern England, Cornwall, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, and Brittany composed the Lives of literally hundreds of Celtic saints. As well as the two traditions of spiritual guidance that shaped this form of ministry, hagiographies provide a wealth of information about soul friendship and its immersion in the everyday life and spirituality of Celtic Christianity. These writings reveal how common soul-friend relationships were between men and men, women and women, and women and men and, as the story of Brigit and the young cleric in part one of this series shows, the importance of everyone having a soul friend, including the laity. The symbolic language of these hagiographies also offers, I believe, insights into the meaning of soul-friend relationships that transcend that early history.
