Dante is in de eerste plaats de grandioze dichter van 'La Divina Commedia', maar ook zijn jeugdwerk, 'Vita Nuova' is vrij interessant. Dit laatste bestaat uit 25 sonnetten, 4 canzones, 1 ballade en 1 stanza. Het thema van 'Nieuw Leven' is Dante's liefde voor Beatrice. De dichter beschrijft hoe hij haar voor het eerst ziet (1283) wanneer zij negen jaar oud is en hoe hij haar opnieuw ontmoet als zij achttien is. Bij die ontmoeting schenkt zij enige aandacht aan hem en dat maakt hem dronken van geluk. Om zijn liefde te maskeren, veinst hij dat hij ook interesse heeft voor andere vrouwen. Met dit doel schrijft hij zelfs enkele sonnetten. Dit heeft als gevolg dat Beatrice weigert hem bij een volgende gelegenheid te groeten, waardoor hij neerslachtig wordt. Tevens heeft hij visioenen over haar en 'voorziet' haar vroegtijdige dood. In die gemoedstoestand schrijft hij een aantal gedichten om haar te verheerlijken. Hij put hieruit enige troost, maar wordt overmand door verdriet als Beatrice niet lang daarna sterft.

Les Guelfes, qui soutiennent le pouvoir temporel du pape et émettent des revendications nationalistes, s'opposeront aux Gibelins, qui soutiennent l'autorité du Saint-Empire romain germanique qui exerce une certaine influence en Italie. Le conflit se transformera en guerre civile. Dante, partisan des Guelfes, sera du coté des vainqueurs à la bataille de Campaldino de 1289 qui opposera les Florentins aux Gibelins de Pise et d'Arezzo. Les Guelfes seront alors victimes d'une scission.

Dante Aleghieri He was born in Florence, Italy, in 1265. Italy in those days was not a united country, but a collection of mostly small city-states. Feuds and power struggles between noble families were a constant source of wars between states and of turmoil and civil war within them. Dante, heir of a poor but noble family, was one of the seven elected officials in charge of the government of Florence, when an accidental collision in the street during the May Festival in 1300 led to a brawl that escalated into a civil war that ultimately got Dante's party overthrown and its leaders (including Dante) exiled from Florence. He spent the rest of his life in exile, pining for his native city. In 1293 he published a book called the Vita Nuova (The New Life), in which he relates how he fell in love with a young girl (Beatrice), and found his chief happiness in thinking of her, and looking at her from afar. In 1304 or shortly thereafter he published De Vulgari Eloquentia, an argument for writing poems and other works in the language that people speak (in his case, Italian) rather than in Latin.
