Lake Of Menteith Choir. RB Cunninghame Graham (18521936), the writer, traveller andpolitician, lies buried here alongside his wife. The Priory http://lochs.smallplanet.co.uk/lakement.htm
Extractions: Lake of Menteith Although this pretty reed and waterlily-fringed lake is often claimed to be `Scotland's only lake', there are in fact a few other minor ones. The lake, which lies only 17m above sea-level, is some 2.Skm long and about 1.5km wide, so that its maximum depth of about 22m actually extends below sea-level. Its waters are home to many kinds of birds, including geese, herons, swans and great-crested grebes, as well as providing good fishing for rainbow and brown trout (by permit). Curling matches are held when severe winters make the ice thick enough, and in 1979 the Grand Match between the north and south of Scotland was held here. The loch may look placid enough at most seasons of the year, but it resembles Loch Lomond in that it can be rough and treacherous, particularly when strong westerlies are blowing. There have been several drowning accidents over the years. The tree-clad islands of Inchmahome (Isle of St Colman or Colmoc), the smaller Inch Talla (`Castle Island') and Inch Cuan (`Dog Island') add interest to the scene. It may seem paradoxical that the loch is called a' lake', but its three islands are all `inches' in Scottish style. However, records show that over the years the loch has been called variously - Lake of Inchmahome (in 1485 and 1845); Loch of Inchmahome (1646) and Loch of Monteath (1724). As if to confuse matters further, local folk called it the `Loch o' Port' in the nineteenth century. Port of Menteith is a tiny hamlet, which owes its name to its having been the landing place for monks who inhabited the island Priory of Inchmahome. In mediaeval times the Port was a larger and more important settlement which was made a Burgh of Barony by James III in 1467. The Lake Hotel dates from 1854, when tourism in the district was on the increase. The hamlet even boasted its own railway station, which was only 6km away, a 1915 guide noting that `
