Extractions: Henry Clay: A Featured Biography Henry Clay of Kentucky (1777-1852), closely associated with the "Golden Era" of the Senate, was one member of a "Great Triumvirate" that made an indelible mark on Senate historyalong with Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun. As Senator, Speaker of the House, and Secretary of State, Clay enjoyed a distinguished political career, even though he never attained his greatest desirethe presidency. Clay's leadership guided a fragile Union through several critical impasses before the breakdown of such compromises resulted in Civil War. Although Clay earned titles such as "The Great Compromiser" and "The Great Pacificator," he was also a shrewd and ambitious politician with some powerful enemies, notably President Andrew Jackson. In 1833, Clay orchestrated Jackson's censure . When Clay died in 1852 , a great Senate voice was silenced and an era ended. Clay became the first person honored by a funeral ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda Historical information provided by the Senate Historical Office.

Extractions: This bronze sculpture was one of several that artist Henry Kirke Brown modeled and cast in 1852, shortly after the death of Senator Henry Clay. Although Brown apparently never modeled the Kentucky senator from life, this sculpture is a fine likeness of him. It was used to make the frontispiece for a volume of obituary addresses given by the members of the Senate and House of Representatives, published following Clay's death.

Named for this statesman, Henry Clay is one of the oldest original Havana brands, quoted in a poem entitled The Betrothed , penned in 1898 by Rudyard Kipling ("theres calm in a Henry Clay"). The following is a brief overview of that history: Several thousand Hurons occupied present-day West Virginia during the late 1500s and early 1600s. During the early 1700s, the Shawnee, Mingo, Delaware, and other Indian tribes also used present-day West Virginia as a hunting ground.
