Extractions: PhD project: Investigating Ultra-Fine Grained Materials Supervisor Dr Phil Prangnell Email: m.berta@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk I landed in sunny Manchester 1 year ago, and came with the aim of investigating the recovery and recrystallization of ultrafine grained aluminium alloys. Coming from another country and from working in another field (polymer-clay nanocomposites) I decided: Why not cutting-edge research on aluminium? Some topics and questions Im trying to answer with my work on UFG materials: Is recovery time affected by the strain used to obtain the ultrafine grained structure? By which mechanism is recovery controlled for the above mentioned alloys? How do second-phase particles affect recovery rate? I s an ultrafine structure stable to recovery after annealing (175 C)? The project involves lots of processing by ECAE (equal channel angular extrusion), SEM to see recristallization and grain growth, TEM to see dislocations rearranging and point defects disappearing... much good quality research thanks to the very high standard of
