Extractions: Joseph Smith Jr. claimed to receive revelation from God instructing him how to restore to the earth the same church that Christ founded. Smith thus became founder, president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) . In June, 1844, Smith was murdered by a mob in Carthage, Illinois. In the ensuing turmoil, the majority of Mormons accepted Brigham Young as the next prophet of the church. A few, however, thought that Smith designated his 12 year-old son Joseph Smith III as his successor. This group did not follow the majority of Mormons to Utah, and in 1860, when Joseph Smith III had matured, this group founded the RLDS Church in Illinois with Smith as prophet. The church moved its headquarters to Independence, Missouri in 1920 due to a 19th-century Joseph Smith Jr. statement designating the city as Zion. Extractions: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints maintains the largest genealogical data collection in the world, at the main Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The library collects information from members and other submitters through the Genealogical Society of Utah, the corporate business end of the Family History Department of the church. The reason that the LDS church is so interested in genealogy is explained in church doctrine: family love and life can continue forever, even after death. To help make this happen, members want to be able to perform the temple ordinances, namely baptisms, endowments, and sealings to spouses and to parents, and also confirmations and ordinations. Endowments are like promises to the Lord to obey the covenants that are set by Him for life on Earth. Sealings are a binding together of families; husband and wife, and children to parents, in order to spend eternity together.

Extractions: of Latter-day Saints An Overview The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a community based on Jesus Christ the Son of God, and His works and teachings. It is our conviction that Jesus Christ organized a church during his ministry on earth. But during the following centuries many influences concerning teachings, organization and excecution of sacred ordinances led this church away from its original. After this falling away (which has been prophesied by the early apostels) it became necessary for the original church of Jesus Christ to be restored by its founder, the Savior himself. In this sense we understand the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the restored early church. A young man from the eastern North-Americas by the name of Joseph Smith jr. acted as the mouthpiece and tool of God for this restoration more than 160 years ago. He became a modern-day prophet and as such translated a book of holy scriptures, which stands with the Holy Bible as a testimony of God's dealings with mankind and as an another witness of Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon, as this historical and religious document is called, gave us our nickname of "Mormons", which however has never been an official name for the Church. Like in ancient times, the Church today is also led by prophets and apostles. Following Joseph Smith jr., who died as a martyr for his faith, Brigham Young led the heavily persecuted Saints (thus the followers of Christ were called in ancient times, despite their imperfections) in a great treck to the west of the United States, into the Rocky Mountains to what today is called the state of Utah. There, in Salt Lake City, the Church still has its headquarters. The land, originally a desert, was made fruitful by the Mormon pioneers.
