Extractions: Chaucer was born in London about 1340. His father and grandfather were vintners, who belonged to the upper class of merchants. Our first knowledge of Geoffrey Chaucer is obtained from the household accounts of the Princess Elizabeth, daughter-in-law of Edward III, in whose family Chaucer was a page. An entry shows that she bought him a fine suit of clothes, including a pair of red and black breeches. Such evidence points to the fact that he was early accustomed to associating with the nobility, and enables us to understand why he and the author of Piers Plowman regard life from different points of view. In 1359 Chaucer accompanied the English army to France and was taken prisoner. Edward III thought enough of the youth to pay for his ransom. After his return he was made valet of the king's chamber. The duties of that office "consisted in making the royal bed, holding torches, and carrying messages." Later, Chaucer became a squire. In 1370 he was sent to the continent on a diplomatic mission. He seems to have succeeded so well that during the next ten years he was repeatedly sent abroad in the royal service. He visited Italy twice and may thus have met the Italian poet Petrarch. These journeys inspired Chaucer with a desire to study Italian literature,a literature that had just been enriched by the pens of Dante and Boccaccio.

His life is known primarily through records pertaining to his career as a courtier and civil servant under the English kings Edward III and Richard II The son of a prosperous London wine merchant, Chaucer may have attended the Latin grammar school of Saint Paul's Cathedral and may have studied law at the Inns of Court. In 1357 he was page to the countess of Ulster, Elizabeth, the wife of Prince Lionel, third son of Edward III; there, he would have learned the ways of the court and the use of arms. By 1367 Chaucer was an esquire to Edward. About 1366 he married Philippa Roet, a lady-in-waiting to the queen and afterward in the service of John of Gaunt , who was duke of Lancaster and Edward's fourth son. Chaucer served as controller of customs for London from 1374 to 1386 and clerk of the king's works from 1389 to 1391, in which post he was responsible for maintenance of royal buildings and parks. About 1386 Chaucer moved from London to a country residence (probably Greenwich), where in 1386 he was justice of the peace and representative to Parliament. He traveled on several diplomatic missions to France, one to Spain in 1366, and two to Italy from 1372 to 1373 and in 1378. In the last year of his life, Chaucer leased a house within the precincts of

Extractions: This paper assesses the role of courtly love in Chaucer's "The Parliament of Fowls". This continental tradition is redolent in the game-like nature of the final debate, the presence of Ovid, Scipio and other classical characters, in a host of illusions to earlier literature of Amour courtois. 5 pgs. Bibliography lists 4 sources. Chaucer characterizes the Wife of Bath in two different ways. In the Prologue, she is given a common English speech with which to describe herself and her experiences. In the Tale, the wife is able to reveal her own desires in a husband, as she choose a tale that can reflect her wishes. This essay considers how the wife is characterized in the Prologue and the Tale, and then compares this with the video-documentary, Madonna: Truth or Dare. Performance and confession are represented differently, so that the public and private person can be revealed. 4 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
