Het prachtige verhaal over een klein meisje dat in een konijnehol valt en de ene na de andere fantastische gebeurtenis meemaakt, en keer op keer door iets te eten of drinken groter of kleiner wordt. "Alice" is geschreven door Lewis Carroll, een pseudoniem (omkering van de latinisering van zijn twee voornamen) voor Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Dodgson was zeer veelzijdig: wiskundige, portretfotograaf, kinderboekenschrijver en religieus. Dit jaar 1998 is het honderdste sterfjaar van Dodgson. Cruciaal in het leven van Lewis Carroll is de abrupte wijze waarop het contact met de meisjes Liddell verbroken werd. Precies die pagina's zijn uitgesneden uit een levenslang nauwkeurig bijgehouden dagboek, dat stokt op de nogal dreigende passage "Wrote to Mrs. Liddell urging her either -". In feite is doodsimpel niet bekend wat de oorzaak van die breuk is, behalve het resultaat: voor mevrouw Liddell was de heer Dodgson niet meer welkom. Er zijn twee aannemelijke oorzaken: ma Liddell vond Dodgson te min als huwelijkskandidaat, of ma Liddell vond hem een enge pedofiel. Het vermoede huwelijksaanzoek 'op termijn' van Dodgson aan Alice (Dogson was 31 en Alice 11 jaar) was in de Victoriaanse tijd niet ongewoon, maar een verlegen, stotterende wiskundeleraar van matige komaf misschien onoverkomelijk. Het vervolg 'Through the looking glass, and what Alice found there' is minder bekend dan 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Het is een paar jaar na 'Alice' geschreven. Net als veel karakters in Alice aan het kaartspel ontleend zijn en zich daarnaar gedragen, heeft 'Looking glass' als achterliggend idee een schaakspel, en komen de hoofdstukken inderdaad overeen met zetten uit een eindspel, tot schaakmat in het laatste hoofdstuk. Ik heb zelf altijd de prachtige tuin aan het begin voor ogen met de sprekende bloemen, en de sprekende curieuze insekten in het bos (zoals de Rocking-horse-fly, of hobbelpaardevlieg, en de onvertaalbare Bread-and-butter-fly). Uit het beroemdste nonsensgedicht aller tijden, Jabberwocky, citeren we het eerste couplet: 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.
