Lutwidge Ludovicus Lewis Charles Carolus Carroll Born the son of Charles Dodgson, Archdeacon of Richmond Cathedral, Lewis Carroll was the third of eleven children. As a child he took an early interest in mathematics. On being told that logarithms was too difficult for a child to understand, his response was 'Yes, but please explain.' As a child Lewis Carroll produced the family magazine, where he showed his first interest in parody, word-play and puzzles. At Rugby, he was a diligent, but not very happy pupil. At Christ Church, Oxford, he excelled in his preferred subject, mathematics. Although ordained, Carroll never entered the church, though he did occasionally preach. Ordination was at the time, a necessary prerequisite to lecture at Oxford in mathematics. From entering Oxford at the age of 18 in 1850, Carroll was to spend the next fifty years of his life at Oxford until his death in 1898.

His mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious. At the time of his birth, his father, Dr. Dodgson, was the vicar of Daresbury, Cheshire (he later was presented with the Crown living of Croft, Yorkshire, and subsequently became Archdeacon of Richmond and one of the Canons of Ripon Cathedral), and was a distinguished scholar whose favorite study was mathematics. Daresbury was isolated, but there was no want of children, so Charles invented games to amuse himself and his brothers and sisters. He made a train with railway stations in the Rectory garden; he did conjuring in a brown wig and a long white robe; he made a troupe of marionettes and a stage with the aid of the family and a village carpenter; he wrote all the plays for it himself, and manipulated the strings. Music by Mike Batt, renowned in the UK as the man who did the music for the Wombles. It was performed in the Albert Hall in London in the 80s, and transmitted on TV. I've got a recording on VHS. From: "Purrer's CyberSpace Cafe" Mike Batt, the composer and lyricist, is perhaps better known for his music for the film "Watership Down." I am very much a Carrollian enthusiast, and I find Batt's suite of songs, linked by readings of verses from the poem, and orchestral pieces, very much in the spirit of Carroll. I reccommend it to other Carrol enthusiasts. Art Garfunkel, Julian Lennon and Roger Daltry are among the performers on the CD which I have: a different version was produced on stage and broadcast on British television.

    Extractions: English author (1832-1898) Charles L. Dogson was born in Daresbury (Lancashire) in 1832, son of a protestant minister. At the age of 18 he joint Christ Church, within Oxford University. Later, he got a degree in Humanities and in 1857 he became teacher at the University. From 1855 on, he worked at the Oxford Library, combining his librarian job with private classes, courses at the university and collaborations in literary reviews. It's precisely then that he met little Alice Liddell, one of the dean's daughters, for whom he was going to write Alice's adventures. In 1865, Carroll and Alice's parents were set at odds so he couldn't see Alice again until 1891. He met other girls who became his friends: Gertrude Chattaway in 1875, and Isa Bowman in 1887. After giving up his teachings at Christ Church, Carroll began teaching at a girls school in Oxford. He died in 1898, leaving his theoretical treaty Symbolic Logic unfinished. Since he was 13, young Dogson devoted himself to publishing small literary magazines with his brothers and sisters, for the use of the guests at Croft Presbytery (Yorkshire) where his father preached. These magazines included his own writings, illustrations, poems and songs, some pages devoted to letters to the Editor and some short parodies of contemporary novels.
