    Extractions: John Caldwell Calhoun (1782-1850) of South Carolina, was a major American political figure before the Civil War. Calhoun played an important part in national affairs for 40 years. He was vice president of the United States from 1825 to 1832, and he ran for president several times but never won. He also served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and of the Senate, and as secretary of war and secretary of state. Calhoun is best known for his doctrine of states' rights, in which he claimed that each U.S. state had a right to nullify (reject) national laws. He wished to use the doctrine to protect slavery and other Southern interests without requiring the Southern States to secede (withdraw) from the Union. Later, however, the doctrine helped bring on the Civil War (1861-1865). Calhoun entered national politics as a member of the House of Representatives from 1811 to 1817. He was an ardent nationalist and, together with other young congressmen, was called a War Hawk for advocating the War of 1812 . He actively supported the government's postwar program, which included a protective tariff, a national bank, and an enlarged army and navy. He improved the army's organization while secretary of war from 1817 to 1825.

Calhoun's Disquisition on Government has been called a "deep look at the nature of man and government". Calhoun saw himself as the heir of Thomas Jefferson and the Republican tradition, but he rejected both the Lockean view of natural rights and the optimistic Enlightenment view of human nature and human societies. According to Calhoun, man is by nature selfish, arrogant, jealous, and vengeful, and these tendencies must be controlled by the state. There are no natural rights. Calhoun went further, arguing that the United States was not a nation, but a confederation of nations, and attacked the key founding doctrines expounded by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay in the Federalist Papers . In the Disquisition , he challenges Federalist 's assumption that institutions can be a product of reflection and reason;

Calhoun of South Carolina was elected vice president in 1824 with John Quincy Adams, and was reelected with Andrew Jackson in 1828. While vice president, Calhoun developed his theory of nullification, which would have let a state disregard, or nullify federal laws it deemed harmful. This theory helped tie the ideas of slavery, states' rights, and secession together in the ante-bellum South. When Calhoun resigned from the vice presidency in 1833, South Carolina elected him to the Senate. There he became one of the Senate's "Great Triumvirate" (with Daniel Webster and Henry Clay), which led the Senate during the second quarter of the 19th century. ~ Early Years ~ He was born near Abbeville, S.C., on Mar. 18, 1782. The son of a slave-holding up-country farmer, Calhoun was educated at Moses Waddell's Log College in Georgia and at Yale University and studied law under Tapping Reeve at Litchfield, Conn. Admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1807, Calhoun served in the state legislature from 1809 to 1811 and in Congress from 1811. As a Congressman, he was a prominent War Hawk, a term designating a group of young nationalists who urged war with England to vindicate American national honor. Appointed (1817) secretary of war in the cabinet of James Monroe, Calhoun supported the "American System," which called for full use of federal power to nurture American industry through a protective tariff and to promote commerce through a federally chartered Bank of the United States and through federally financed road, canal, and harbor construction.

Unfortunately, Jackson and Calhoun had become bitter enemies by 1832, and Calhoun resigned as vice president to reenter the Senate. As the antislavery campaign grew in the North, Calhoun, who had merely tolerated slavery, became its strongest defender. In 1844 as secretary of state in John Tyler's administration, he negotiated a treaty for the annexation of Texas. This effectively preserved sectional balance in the Union by enlarging the area open to slavery.

In 1824 Calhoun was a candidate for president but wound up as vice president when John Quincy Adams was elected President in one of Americas most highly contested elections. Four years later he was reelected to the vice presidency when Andrew Jackson defeated J.Q. Adams. John C. Calhoun was the first and will certainly be the last Vice President to have served under two presidents who were political opponents.
