Extractions: INTRODUCTION The History of Women is an indispensable research tool for all those interested in the study of women's history. Primary source materials, selected from the world's most important library holdings through 1920, have been brought together to create the most comprehensive microfilm collection ever assembled on the subject. The Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and the Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe College are the two renowned women's history archives that form the core of the microfilm collection. These extensive archives contain invaluable documentary evidence of women's individual and corporate activities. Other notable collections have contributed incomparable additional resources to the Smith-Radcliffe materials. The Jane Addams Hull House Library provided depth in its coverage of the settlement house movement, and of the activities of women in social reform in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The unparalleled private collection of Miriam Y. Holden offered an incisive look at Medieval and Western European women. New York Public Library and Boston Public Library added rare early imprints and periodicals on women outside America. And the Mcpherson Collection at Scripps College enriched the

Extractions: There were Earls of Arundell. The Earls of Arundell before the Conquest are somewhat lost in the mists of antiquity, and they do not affect the branch of the family from which Lady Burton sprang. This branch traces its descent in a straight line from one Roger de Arundell, who, according to Domesday , had estates in Dorset and Somerset, and was possessed of twenty-eight lordships. The Knights of Arundell were an adventurous race. One of the most famous was Sir John Arundell, a valiant [Page 4] commander who served Henry VI. in France. The grandson of this doughty knight, also Sir John Arundell, was made a Knight Banneret by Henry VII. for his valour at the sieges of Tiroven and Tournay, and the battle that ensued. At his death his large estates were divided between the two sons whom he had by his first wife, the Lady Eleanor Grey, daughter of the Marquis of Dorset, whose half-sister was the wife of Henry VII. The second son, Sir Thomas Arundell, was given Wardour Castle in Wiltshire, and became the ancestor of the Arundells of Wardour.

Extractions: Can tie the gall up in the slanderous tongue? S HAKSPEARE A T this point of the narrative it is necessary to turn aside to deal with Miss Stisted's impeachment of Lady Burton, in the matter of her husband's recall from Damascus. Miss Stisted asserts that the true cause of Burton's recall was Isabel his wife, who had espoused with more zeal than discretion the cause of the Shazli converts to Christianity. She adds: "And while her husband, continually absent exploring or attending to the duties of his Consulate, knew nothing, or next to nothing, about her dangerous proceedings, she impressed upon the people that she acted with his full permission and approval." It was (according to Miss Stisted) Isabel's "imprudence and passion for proselytizing" which so enraged the Moslems and the Turkish authorities [Page 511] against Burton that they clamoured for his recall. Thus it is argued that "the true cause of the terrible crash in 1871" was Isabel, and Isabel alone.

Letters Historical Travelogues by Women Lugging a Piano to Khartoum Up until the 20th century, it was uncommon for European women to travel the Orient. Those who did, however, shared attitudes ranging from open curiosity and sympathy to the shameless conceit of superiority and racism â just like their men Isabelle Eberhardt, 1877-1904 Traveling was a male domain well into the nineteenth century, and the few exceptions confirm the rule. One such exception was Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762), who accompanied her husband when he was dispatched as ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Her bid to foster cultural understanding, the posthumously published "Letters from Constantinople" became a classic among travel literature. "So you see, she wrote on May 19, 1718, from Constantinople, "these people are not as uncouth as we portray them" and even conjectured "that they have a more proper notion of life." The book owes its success not least of all to the author's access to the harem. Exclusion had stirred up the fantasies of male travelers for centuries, giving rise to many peculiar beliefs. It was predominantly British women who made a name for themselves as writers of travelogues. The late nineteenth century was the heyday of adventurous travelogues. Isabel Burton (1831-1896), Isabelle Bird (1831-1904), Anne Blunt (1867-1917), and Gertrude Bell (1868-1926) traveled through Arab countries, and Freya Stark (1893-1993), a British woman born in Paris and brought up in Italy, frequently visited the Middle East between 1928 and 1983 and made a name for herself as a photographer.
