Return to the Table of Contents Creator Bixby, William K., 1857-1931 Title The William Keeney Bixby Papers Identification: Return to the Table of Contents After several years in St. Louis, William McMillan, president of the Missouri Car and Foundry Company, offered the rapidly rising young man a still better job. Within the now-traditional year he again attracted signal attention to himself. His employers had made a ruinous contract for the purchase of pig iron and by his direct honesty Bixby renegotiated the contract, making a long-range, profitable ally for his company. At the age of thirty-one he became vice-president and general manager. Soon the company became such a large factor in freight-car building that it found it advantageous to merge with the Peninsular Car Company, the first step in a series of mergers out of which came the American Car and Foundry Company, of which Bixby became President, and soon thereafter was elected chairman of the board. At the age of forty-eight, in 1905, he retired.

Hatchard and Son published the Byronic Ismael: An Oriental Tale, with Other Poems , for which, even though sales were poor, young Edward received acknowledgement from Sir Walter Scott. The following year, Edward honed his mathematics skills under the tutelage of an Oxford scholar named Thomson, and in 1822 entered Trinity College, Cambridge, during the Easter term, transferring to Trinity Hall as a fellow-commoner in order to be excused from attending lectures. Through the Union Debating Society he became acquainted with the university's leading undergraduates, including the future historian Thomas Babington Macaulay , Alexander Cockburn (later, a chief justice), W. M. Praed, Charles Villiers, F. D. Maurice, Charles Buller, and Benjamin Hall Kennedy, who years later would piece together Bulwer's novel from his extant notes. The Gulliveresque narrator, an American named "Tish" who describes the utopian achievements of Vril-ya society, is a satirical device for revealing "what Bulwer believes to be an inconsistency in the American national characterña fondness for social rank and a penchant for democratic leveling" (127). The story probably influenced H. Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwar was known, after the death of his mother in 1843, as Edward George Earle Bulwar-Lytton, and then after he was raised to the peerage in 1866, as Baron Lytton of Knebworth. Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton was created first earl of Lytton in 1880. Contemporary writers would often refer to one or the other as "Lord Lytton," "Baron Lytton" or "Edward Bulwer-Lytton" and assume their readers knew to whom they were referring. This has occasionally mislead even serious scholars. Shown here is the frontispiece to Edward Bulwer-Lytton by James L. Campbell Sr. , University of California at Santa Barbara.
