Printable version The Burrill File, kept in the Library's Special Collections Department, Room 55 of the State House, is a group of materials primarily concerned with the State House and Massachusetts political figures. Materials include photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, pamphlets, etc. The collection is based on one compiled by Ellen Mudge Burrill, author of a number of guides to the State House. There have been numerous additions to the collection and materials are continuously added. The materials in the collection are arranged alphabetically by subject or by individual person's name. All materials about the State House are first listed under the heading, "State House," and then further subdivided; i.e., "State House-House of Representatives." A list of the subject headings currently in use with the Burrill File is given here.

Extractions: Lakeside Cemetery, which nestles against Kingston Lake between Ninth Avenue and Lakewood Drive in Conway, is more than a century old. George Burroughs and John Benjamin Mayo, both infants, were buried there in 1869. These are the oldest tombstones which are legible, though there are at least two old wooden markers which are now weathered past any inscriptions which they might have once had. In 1903 Hal L. Buck was intendant (mayor) of Conway. According to the minutes for November 9 of that year, "Intendant reported he had seen Mrs. Addie Burroughs as to the Cemetery and she is willing to donate to the town 6 acres, and make conveyance to town for same as soon as same can be surveyed, provided town pay for rearranging fences and opening street to cemetery. Intendant instructed to take deed on terms named and that Mr. F. A. Burroughs be requested to have fencing done and render bill to town". The arrangements were completed and on June 13, 1904, an ordinance was passed making it the only place within the corporate limits in which bodies could be interred. The ordinance referred to it as the ''new cemetery for white persons'' and records show that separate negotiations were going on for a burial ground for Negroes. The adoption of this ordinance effectively closed the churchyards of Conway to future burials, though some few exceptions have occurred. Lots in Lakeside sold for as little as $5.00 and after its acquisition by the town records of those owning them were maintained by the Town Clerk. A map of the cemetery and lists of the owners of record of the plots are available in the City Hall. No lots have been sold since 1962 by the town, according to Miss Delores Beverly, present City Clerk, but information about those which are for sale by the owners is available. Miss Beverly has been most helpful in making available information included above.

Extractions: Vertical Files in the Special Collections Department Blacksburg, Virginia, was founded in 1798 on a thirty-eight acre tract laid out and deeded by William Black, for whom the town was named. The original town was limited to a sixteen-block area bounded by present-day Draper Road, Jackson Street, Wharton Street, and Clay Street. Blacksburg's town limits were slightly northeast of an earlier frontier settlement dating from 1748 called Draper' s Meadow, near the Duck Pond on the Virginia Tech campus. Smithfield, built in 1773 by William Preston, sits on the original Draper's Meadow site. In 1851 a Methodist seminary, the Olin and Preston Institute, was founded in Blacksburg; its sole building was finished in 1855, located on a hillside on present-day Main Street between College Avenue and the Mall. The Olin and Preston Institute, always struggling economically, was closed during the Civil War, and after the war it was reopened as the Preston and Olin Institute. Several years later the trustees of the Methodist school entered the competition for the Morrill land grant funds andagainst sizeable oddswon. The new Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, now Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, was founded in 1872.
