Extractions: Index of Correspondents William Cowper Brann, born January 4, 1855 in Humboldt, Illinois, was an author, lecturer, and newspaper editor. Following his mother's death in 1857, he was placed by his father, Noble Brann, a Presbyterian minister, with William and Nancy Hawkins. At thirteen years of age Brann left his foster home to begin working at a series of jobs that included bellboy, printer, professional baseball pitcher, opera company manager, and, eventually, newspaper reporter. After settling in Rochelle Illinois, he married Carrie Belle Martin in 1877. They had three children: Inez, Grace Gertrude, and William Carlyle. Brann's caustic and vitriolic journalistic style made enemies that prompted frequent changes in his employment. In 1891 following disagreements with the editor-in-chief of the HOUSTON POST, and the death and probable suicide of his first daughter Inez (age 13), he moved to Austin, Texas, where he launched his own publication, the AUSTIN INCONOCLAST. Although renamed the TEXAS ICONOCLAST in 1892, neither volume was successful. In that same year Brann became editor of the SAN ANTIONIO EXPRESS. In 1893, following other freelance editorships, Brann sold the Austin publication to William Sydney Porter ("O. Henry") who rechristened it THE ROLLING STONE.

Brann was born in Illinois and died in Waco, Texas Brann was a highly opinionated, colorful writer. At the time of his death, Brann edited the Iconoclast in Waco, Texas. He was also noted for his virulently racist views, writing approvingly of horrific murders of black citizens. One of his targets was Baylor University , a prominent Baptist institution in Waco. Brann revealed that Baylor officials had been importing South American children recruited by missionaries and making house-servants out of them. Brann was shot in the back by Tom Davis, a Baylor supporter. Brann wheeled, drew his pistol, and killed Davis. Brann was helped home by his friends, and died there of his wounds. edit Charles Carver. Extractions: by William R. Carr A list of notable Americans would be incomplete without the name of W. C. Brann, the Great Iconoclast, somewhere near the top. Yet his name is conspicuously absent from most such lists. Few, if any, history books, reference works, or lists of men of letters mention him. But, if there was ever an American worth remembering, Brann is such a man. Yet evidence of his existence is difficult to find. Though Brann's complete workstwelve volumes of themwere published in 1919, the blinds have since been tightly drawn on his public memory. When this article was written, I only knew of one book about Brann This was Brann and the Iconoclast , a biography, by Charles Carver, published in 1957 by the University of Texas. Another work has recently been published, O damnit!, A lexicon and Lecture from William Cowper Brann, The Iconoclast , by Jerry Flemmons (published 1998, by the Texas Tech University Press). Only two quotes in The Great Quotations , compiled by George Seldes, attest to Brann's existance and quotability: "
