He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1815 and entered the army. After gaining experience with the fur trade while serving at frontier posts, Bonneville obtained a leave of absence from the army and in 1832 led an expedition into the Rocky Mountains. Making his base on the Green River in Wyoming, he spent the next four years in fur trading and exploring. Having overstayed his leave from the army, he was dismissed. Captain Bonneville left for the frontier post of Ft. Osage on the Missouri in May 1932, with 110 men. He went by wagon train to save the delay of packing and unpacking horses. Also less horses meant less chance of them getting stole by the Indians. Wagons were also easily defended and provided good protection. There were 20 wagons in all. I.R. Walker and M.S. Cerre were his second in command. He hired several Delaware Indians were hired as hunters. That year, he was going to Pierre's Hole where the trappers redenzvous would be that year. On the way, he made friends with the Kansas Chief White Plume. On July 11, the expedition came to the fork of the Platte river. Though the route of the North Platte was unknown to him he took it because he was headed to the Rocky mountains. Herds of buffalo became more plentiful on this route. They reached the Wind River mountains on July 20.
